Leaving public as senior, will I regret it? Can't decide what to do and if it will hinder my salary growth.

@Associate Manager 1... It might be that you just haven't made it exist for you? If you're sick of someone breathing down your neck, tell them to chill out. If your staff needs babysitting, coach them better and set clearer expectations. If you're working 70 hours a week, delegate more tasks. If you don't want to travel, just say no.

You can scoff at my suggestions, but not everyone has ppl breathing down their neck, has to babysit staff, works 70 hours a week, and travels. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I have yet to meet someone who says they regret leaving public accounting. The salary growth thing is also definitely a myth to keep you in public. And if you're really worried about this, just leave on good terms since you can always come back.

like

^ no offense, but sounds like you've been drinking the kool-aid. Most people don't want to become controllers so better to move on to find out what you want to do.

like

PS: Leave and never look back.

What flexibility? I laugh every time I hear someone in public say that. I had much more flexibility in industry where deadlines were more lax, no one was breathing down my neck, I didn't have staff who needed babysitting, and I didn't have to work 60-70 hours a week, or travel like its nobody's business. I don't think people know what flexibility is. Flexibility in Big 4 is something people like to talk about, but it doesn't exist.

like

^agreed, haha. "According to some studies I read", lol😂. According to some studies I have read there is no difference in longterm pay if you leave at senior or manager. If you don't like it leave, just be good at what you do and the money will work out whether you stay or leave. I would argue it better to leave if you don't like public b/c finding something you enjoy will cause you to perform better. Good luck !

like

@PwC -1 made it exist? You sound like that's an option. Most teams in public aren't that accommodating and you know that. Everyone in public knows that (or they are lying to themselves and others). If you've found that unicorn, great for you. That isn't the norm. If you're just going to say no to all these things you've highlighted, why not leave and find what you want somewhere else? Public accounting is NOT the end-all-be-all of accounting careers, no matter how much of that BS "they" try to feed you. There's more out there, folks. Life's too short.

like

Several people in my office left after getting manager and then came back because they missed the flexibility. Could be market specific, as I'm in a smaller a market and probably have less "good" exit opportunities.

Thank you all. I gotta agree with most people here. I'm not interested in becoming controller anyway so I rather jump in now and learn the technical than look at unnecessary amounts of samples all day

Think it was a Bloomberg article with aicpa data. If you don't want to be in industry management leave when u like. But if u want to be in a management position I find it better to lateral at manager granted you aren't miserable etc

like

Leaving before manager is usually like throwing 1m of lifetime earnings away according to some studies I read. You cap out on what you can do. Like if you leave as a senior you may get a controller position but it will (a) take time or (b) be with a very small company and probably can't get a cfo position for a long time. As a manager you can usually lateral into industry into either position

Another question: what are typical roles people jump to after B4 audit senior ? Don't have as much technical accounting knowledge so alittle worried about the future. Panicking ensued

I don't know what I want to do. But I know I am building value while I am here figuring it out.

I didn’t have any break between jobs so I realized I burned out quick here. We brainstormed how we can work together to make this a better experience for me. Hopefully he was genuine and doesn’t fire me!

I am generally uncomfortable when I’m around my mother-in-law’s husband.

While he is overall a decent guy, his anger issues, yelling at his wife for the slightest issue, and insulting nature makes me uncomfortable and triggers my own anger due to his blatant disrespect for just about everyone around him.

My mother-in-law says he’s worked on things, but it’s been 10 years of this and I’m not sure I want such behavior around my wife and our kids since we’re trying to conceive soon (cont).
