Cogno AI Hey fishes, One of my friends, got offer in cognizant. She have an epfo account with inactive UAN and she changed her name in aadhar recently and this epfo account has the past name. So she raised request for name change 2 months ago and still it's processing. And now cognizant asking the acknowledgement of changed name which the previous company cannot provide for obvious reasons. Will it affect the doj? Or anyone had this kind of problem before? Most agencies will only verify that you used to work there (dates). They don’t want the liability. That’s the official stuff.
If someone knows someone, they might get the dirt. I’d just say you left/went freelance, etc.
There’s 2 things someone can legally ask about your past employment:
- what are the dates and title(s) of employment?
- is this person eligible for rehire?
The first one is a formality. The second one is really about whether you left on your own accord or were fired. Even if you were separated / fired, many companies will say “yes” to rehire question unless you broke a rule or a law because it’s less liability if they say yes.
Not sure where you're getting this misinformation about what someone can "legally" ask. Here's a good resource: https://www.shrm.org/topics-tools/employment-law-compliance/can-employers-give-bad-reference-former-employee
Laws vary by state. Employers are usually most concerned about potential defamation claims which could arise if the information provided is false.
Just say you’re laid off or freelancing. Your new employer will not find out and won’t show up on background check. Even if new employer ask, your old employer only confirms the date you worked there.
