Certainly low but firms don't feel the need to be competitive for someone they see replaceable. If you're in a marketable practice you can certainly make more by lateralling but unless you make equity it likely won't go up much at your current firm.
Helpful - thank you
A good friend is an nep at a v30 and makes the same with much lower rates and billables
I think hes billing 2000 at like $1600/hour
At Kirkland the first two years of NEP are just the same as 7th and 8th year Cravath scale, plus above-market sweeteners (which makes sense given that Kirkland makes you NEP starting year 7). Year 3 of NEP (9th year) has more variation since apparently top performers can get a big boost in comp in the run up to EP, but most are generally moderately above 8th year comp.
End of year 9 is when you’re up for EP. If you make it, first year is a fixed $1.5m, then starting year 2 it’s 100% variable based on shares. By my estimates last year minimum EP comp was around $3.7m.
If you don’t make it, you either wait at NEP until you do make EP, or wait forever and never make it, or get offered a senior NEP position that is effectively the same as counsel at other firms. All NEPs starting year 10 have individualized comp that ranges from ~$600k up to $2m for some senior NEPs (often specialists that can’t justify equity but are highly valued).
P2 are you at Kirkland? Because the 2.5 number was accurate like 3 years ago and PPEP has gone way up since then.
I’m at a big law firm with only equity partnership. Several seniors who made partner have disclosed (bitterly) that they have actually made less as a partner than the senior associates who are on top of the Cravath scale. Not encouraging…
Yeah this is why equity vs nonequity isn’t as simple as people think. A “single tier” partnership almost certainly has gradations of pay and power within it as well. There are NEPs making way more at some firms than some EPs at other firms.
This is lower than my V10. I will bill fewer hours and with a lower billing rate, and as a second year income partner will be more than the Y3 number.
This seems low given that billable rate and annual hourly production.
At whay year does your firm make folks NEP?
It’s initially a 3 year program but I think can be accelerated
Do most income partners bill 2300+?
Don’t think so. It varies widely.
