At this point I would take anything to get out of PA. Im getting out even before I get another job. Im that exhausted. Wishing you all the best OP.
Same here, thinking about just staying unemployed for 6-12 months while I reevaluate my life decisions.
I think if you have less than 2 years of experience, a regular staff accountant position is about right. If you had a year experience as a senior, then I would say you should be aiming for a senior staff accountant role.
I was open to taking a pay cut for a job I interviewed at in order to leave public. Sadly I did not get the position. But if you have a better life at same pay that sounds like an improvement! Just do what’s best for you
Do you want to do the same thing every day/month?
Doing the same thing every day doesn’t sound horrible to me. I’m learning I’m much more of a numbers guy and I don’t like auditing, plus this position I’m interviewing for is at a company with a great reputation for their culture. The biggest thing I’m thinking I might miss if I leave is that I do enjoy the team I work with at my current job but I just don’t think that’s worth working an extra 15 hours a week just because I like my co-workers.
Depends on what your goals are. I'll give you my story: I left right at the end of my second senior year for a senior tax role. My company figured out very quickly I was above that level and gave me that opportunity.
My opinion: Leaving before senior is going to stifle long term growth. You probably haven't been exposed to a lot of the business world, where accounting and finance are secondary (cost center) roles, which is different from firms where you are a revenue center. Upward movement is hard - You need to stand out. It's very easy for people to get comfortable and complacent. Ive worked with people so incompetent they would be expensive even if they were free.
All of that aside, if your goal is a relatively easy job and you don't want the long term stress and hours that are commonplace in accounting, both in public and at higher up roles in industry, go for it! A staff job can provide a nice sustainable income without the stress. Not everything has to be about your career and money.
Missed that you were doing IT audit. IT audit is basically a death sentence. Get out if you want to pivot to an accounting role.
Did you go to college to work in an industry staff role with limited growth potential? Where do you want to be in life in 3-5 years?
Ultimately I just want to be happy in my job, and I don’t see that happening working in public accounting. While you’re saying limited growth potential, you can still move up into senior Accountant and accounting manager roles, but you just are less likely to be in a role on the level of partner at a public accounting firm. However, there’s really no chance that I would stay in public accounting long enough to be a partner, and senior accountants/managers make a solid income with less hours worked from what I understand.
