Love that government work comes with solid benefits — health, time off, and support to grow.
It makes a big difference.

What’s one work perk you really value?

I suppose government work was considered secure at some point. But with all the antigovernment agitation it's not just insecure it can feel potentially dangerous. Even at the county level I get abuse from members of the public when they hear I work for the government. The one perk I'd like to have would be the respect of the public, but I fear that's gone for good.

What did anyone say about you “working for the government“ and why at this big grown age did you care?

I mean yeah those are the perks, but in this climate that could all be taken from you in one second if your team gets furloughed or something. I feel like I used to think government was the best place to be and now I'm not so sure. At least not with DOGE around.

like

I get why you’re feeling that way—it’s tough. Just know your work still matters, and you’re not alone.

Benefits. Those pesky things Congress is trying to vote away right now.

I’m Canadian, so I can’t fully relate, but I get how frustrating it must be to see Congress trying to cut benefits that people depend on. Everyone deserves security after all their hard work.

I feel like government workers are some of the last people who actually have a chance at a pension. Everyone I know who works for the government has some sort of pension, while everyone I know who doesn't work for the government only has their 401(k) and whatever they've invested personally.

like

Same! I see so many really great opportunities out there but the thought of losing my pension keeps me!

like

I don’t see it as a perk as much as I see it as a source of pride but I never served in the military and I see the work I do now as a way to give back to the country that I love so much.

like

I love you're response! What a great way to look at the work we do!

The benefits of being in a rock solid union are strong. But I have to say the perks and benefits I care most about are the retirement saving/pension. Those cannot be matched in any private sector job I’ve ever heard of.

like

The option to carry health insurance into retirement. This is a perk many people either do not know about or do not discuss much.

Not all government jobs get this. In my state only state patrol and corrections get this. The rest of us get NO retirement health care but Medicaid at 65.

I need the health care. We no longer have Cadillac plans, our plans are the same as most large employers. I pay around 10,000 out of pocket for my health care. Job security is the best perk for me. I'll die at my desk and will never see a penny of pension. My husband earns alot more in the private sector, we both have masters level educations. But he's ben outsourced several times.

Wow that's wild! Thanks for sharing I did not know that!

For me it was a pension. I have retired at 52. Now I have six Saturdays and one Sunday. Might change as I look for something part-time. That is why I have an account on here.

Congratulations 🎉 hope you get to continuing enjoying the fruits of your labour!

The benefits are more of a necessity due to it being a stressor from corrupt management. At FEMA you will use benefits frequently and die early. It's great, that the agency is being exposed and obliterated by Trump administration!!

💯 agree!

Once when I was waiting tables, I had a guy pay me cash. The change was 45 cents, which I didn't give back to him because like who wants that. He then asked where the change was, and when I explained that I didn't give back the loose change, he made a big stink about how dollars and cents matter and didn't leave me a tip. He was a republican staffer on capitol hill.

Questions about job hopping-
My average tenure at a company is ~1.5 years (with ~11 YOE), but each jump I've made has yielded progressive/tangible career growth.

I'm concerned after my most recent jump (went from a product director to a head of product position at a different, smaller company after only a year) that I've kind of poisoned future career prospects at larger companies.

Any insights on whether this type of job hopping is a complete deal breaker for potential HMs?

This is only option left to get released from this sh^t place

Interviewed for a GS-15 (same agency but different office) and totally aced the interview with excellent answers. They know I’m a top performer with senior references. However I noticed there was an internal candidate who has been there for few years and interviewed that’s a veteran. I feel my chances just sank and want to gauge thoughts.

I’m looking for a new job, working remotely, that doesn’t require a Bachelor’s. (I’m currently going back to school to get one, as I only have an Associate’s in Mathematics right now)
I had positions in private sector that allowed me to supplement having a degree with experience but not in public sector. I’ve seen coworkers get positions they aren’t able to do simply because they have a degree and then leave a mess for me to clean up but I’m not allowed to have the position. Any suggestions?

I work through a contractor, and was hired 2yrs ago to be a Systems Test Engineer II. They decided last minute to make me a Software Content Manager, but kept my title as is since it was supposed to be a 6mo rotation. I’m still an SCM, and am taking on leadership roles in the group. How do I ask for a title change and pay increase to reflect what I actually do? Do I ask my contract house, or my NASA mgmt? Should I ask to make the pay retroactive since I was hired to do one thing, but do another?

How long did it take you to be promoted to the next pay grade? What do you think contributed the most to that salary increase? If you transitioned into the private sector, what drove you to make this decision? Thanks!

If I move to another job later on (private or federal) this 8 hours of AWOL will show up?

A HR question I really want to understand. ISRS HR quoted a podcast "The not so great resignation" saying 70% regret leaving and many want to go back to old employer. If this really the case the employee likely left due to higher pay at the new company. If they want to boomerang back they will likely come back at even a higher rate than they left the new company for. So getting double raise when they boomeranged. Isn't it unbeneficial, why not just give employee a 7% raise in the first place?

Is it really that difficult to get hired for a federal job? I was interviewed for a GS12 job but never heard back, they still didn’t hire anyone and I didn’t get a rejection. I applied for another GS07 job, was accepted, I took it, but I believe I can do better. I have a master’s and have extra graduate research experience. I am still applying to new jobs but I was told it is impossible to move up the grade level now. Everyone is telling me to stick with the government. What are your thoughts?

I currently work in Private (GA) Aviation & have for some time (about 12 years) I’m currently making the switch to the Department of Aviation and am unsure if I should ditch my current job (in private) and go full force with the DOA & embrace this new opportunity educationally and gather as much experience as I can or keep both jobs even though I’d be working 80hr weeks.. I love the private world but am really ready to move up. I don’t know what I should do. Any suggestions?
