McKinsey & Company McKinsey & Company I have my first rounds (2 cases) for a position at the risk practice. Will I be interviewed by consultants in the risk practice? I wonder if I can ask some risk practice specific questions at the end of the interviews. (Didnât get the names of the interviewers yet so I cannot google)

Lol no you donât need strategy experience.
But how would we know if you can be a good candidate without understanding your experience or achievements?
Most of MBB looks at two things: track record of success, and behavioural fit.
That means, are you awesome at whatever youâve done? Cool. Also, are you the kind of person who might enjoy and excel at consulting (e.g., problem solving expertise)? Great. Can you do a case well? Awesome.
Then, based on qualities you express in the interview weâll make the final decision. Itâs not rocket science to get in but it is difficult to stand out at the resume stage.
Few things that help are:
+ experience that shows you go beyond the role youâve been assigned (itâs not impressive that you manage 10 people if the average person at your position in your company also manages 10 people)
+ GPA >3.8/4
+ GMAT or GRE or some other standardized test >90th percentile (ideally 95th)
+ large number of scholarships or awards recognizing you (e.g., top 30 under 30 locally or something)
All of that helps.
I had a similar profile... suggest taking the GMAT to prove your interest in business, study hard for the case interview, and work your network to get a first round interview
Agree with McK1 - I did a lateral move from a heavy engineering / operations focused background. If you are a good fit - you are in. Strategy skills can be learnt OTJ
Thanks everyone! Very helpful! I donât think Iâm gonna take GMAT just for this but will definitely practice case interviews as much as I can (I got few months).
