MBB folks🔥: if you could trade your years at the firm for years of exp at Google or Apple doing S&O, would you? Is sacrifice in work-life balance worth the prestige or level up when you exit?

I see it as less about wlb (FAANG is similar to MBB, isn't it?) and more about versatility. I believe my time at mbb offers me more opportunities than time at Apple would have.

Could be wrong though.

Think you always work less in industry because you don’t have to do all the stuff that comes with a professional services firm (sales, staffing, bd, performance reviews, etc). Unless you’re in like a dev team w timelines or production targets I’ve heard FAANG (besides amazon ops) have considerable better wlb. Flexibility and variety is why you put up w the extra pain of consulting, imo.

Totally would. I don’t think there is more prestige at MBB, and frankly Google S&O is an exit opp, so why not go there from the start? The only difference is that you know what you’re going to learn at MBB, and I’m not sure industry strategy roles teach you the same way.

And that’s fine, it’s also what I did. Consulting attracts people who don’t really know what they want and want to keep doors open :) Ultimately though if you exit, you’ll have to decide, and then you may ask yourself “why did I spend 3 years in consulting to exit to a firm I could have worked in from the get go”... but it’s true you may not have had that option at all without consulting.

Hey All,
I finished a third round interview, and HR contacted me that afternoon saying I had positive feedback across the board and they would contact me the next day regarding next steps. It’s been two days and they finally get back to me saying they haven’t been able to sync with the hiring manager but will keep me posted. Honestly I wish they would talk with the hiring manager and then let me know the decision instead of checking in. It’s messing with my emotions.

Got an offer for SE III at a large tech company. Product I'd be working on interests me and I think I could grow more than in my current role.

Currently I make 180k base and have ISO/RSUs @ startup (60k/yr worth on paper, but won't be worth anything for a few years, if at all).

The offer is:
Base: $166,500
Target Bonus: 10% ($16,650)
RSU: 120k total (30k/yr)

Thoughts on offer? Should I counter?

Additionally there's a yearly target RSU bonus about equal to the cash bonus. Thoughts? 4.5 YOE

Additional Posts in Consulting

One of the reasons I want to transition from industry to consulting (tier 1) is that I get frustrated when I have to collaborate with mediocre people. My assumption is that Tier 1 consulting firms hire really sharp people and if I can get in, I’ll be collaborating with folks on top of their game (not expecting much from clients). I’m aware there are personal aspects I need to work on like my mindset, patience etc etc, but I just get so frustrated with blatant stupidity.
