Generally the thought is that if you are exiting, exit as a Manager. The junior Partner level is a big bump in pay at MBB but it doesn't translate into similar bumps in exit opps. Kind of ends up being golden handcuffs.
You may find it harder to find an external job that pay 1m at partner level
The difference is you can wear those golden handcuffs and retire early or jump into industry at something much less demanding and stack up a 401k until retirement
And calling it “junior” partner is a stretch... Director, Senior Manager, Associate Partner, Principal (depending on firm) are all decidedly NOT partners. At McK we used to have (junior) partners and senior partners, then we called them Principals and Directors, and now we call the partners and senior partners again.
Thanks D1 For McK this is about right although time at Partner before making Senior Partner (no longer called Director) is 6 years. I see errors in others as well but will leave them to correct
D1, that’s fake news.
KPMG has director and MD positions.
D1 that isn’t correct for us either
ATK is actually 1 yr at BA, 1 yr at Sr. BA, 2 years at Associate, 2-3 years at Manager.
With some even going faster
I'm not sure anyone does 2yrs as an SM and then moved to partner at Deloitte. That seems too fast for all but the highest performers. Same goes for KPMG (Director -> MD) and I'm guessing the rest of the big 4.
