McKinsey 🐟s - what are your promotion cycles for generalist, digital and Ops. I have seen some 2018 MBAs, becoming EMs in 1 year 7 months and some are still associates! Confused as a fellow consultant from EY-P

EM candidates are reviewed at any time (or some regions, monthly). You can make EM after convincing 1-3 Partners to informally give you the role on 2-3 (or 1 big) studies. Then, they speak to your Professional Development person and your title officially changes.

Its up to you to win over trust of leadership, get them to take a chance on you, then kill it.

like

To add to C1s accurate description. We do not shave set promotion timelines, nor does everyone get promoted as cohorts.

like

Hey! I also haven't shaved either!

Also to your question, same procedure/typical timelines for digital and Ops

like

That seems like the right way to promote. Not sticking to a predefined schedule. 👍

Is MBB and management consulting losing its value among young people as employer? Since i noticed majority of young people currently want to work for FAANG, startups, crypto, Unicorns, want to open their own things, etc. I guess in 2000s and 2010s consulting was a top choice for graduates. But what about now? Would love to listen to your thoughts and observations on that one

any insight into how a pmm skillset is different from a brand strategist one? of course the pmm applies insights to and influences the product, but it seems like a lot of the core elements - research, understanding the user, generating insights, developing messaging and angles to speak to them, etc are super similar. interested in transitioning and I want to understand where my gaps are!

Foreign LLM student here. I plan to take the NY bar exam in February. I’m thinking of taking a bar prep course (most likely Barbri). They offer two options: the “traditional” course (which lasts around 2.5 months) and an extended 6-month course. The difference in price is substantial – 2.5k for the traditional course vs 6k for the extended one. Any thoughts/recommendations on which one I should take? In case it is helpful, I come from a civil law country. Thanks!

My current company and many others I know about do not offer the mobility to do so until much later, which is not what I want. Thank you.

Hi! I have worked in management roles in tech, mainly in analytics, for approximately 10 years. My TC has fluctuated (currently around 135K CAD), but it seems like it's relatively easy to breach the 100K bar, but hard to breach the 150K bar. I now work at the CBC, but I have worked in the private sector too. What is the most realistic way to move to 200K? 1) Continue moving the ladder to a VP position, 2) Switch to Pre-Sale, 3) Switch to Consulting, 4) Work from a U.S. company from Canada.

One of the reasons I want to transition from industry to consulting (tier 1) is that I get frustrated when I have to collaborate with mediocre people. My assumption is that Tier 1 consulting firms hire really sharp people and if I can get in, I’ll be collaborating with folks on top of their game (not expecting much from clients). I’m aware there are personal aspects I need to work on like my mindset, patience etc etc, but I just get so frustrated with blatant stupidity.
