Men in BL, have you ever either cried in the office or cried about BL work? (Just pure curiosity…)

Yes but tbh it was related to how shitty our work computers are lol

likefunny

I feel that lol

I have cried more in the past six months since starting this job then I have in the previous six years. And I work in a really collegial office. Just having trouble with the stress and constant feelings of inadequacy.

like

Everyone feels inadequate when they first start. As others have said, that will pass.

These tears don’t fall, they CRASH around me!

I’m fine expressing my emotions, and cry from time to time. Stress, unmet expectations, joy, etc. Felt it all in the office, and cried about it 😅

like

Yeah but I just naturally cry a ton, biglaw or otherwise

like

If you haven't had some sad horrible news broken to you while you're at the office you just haven't had your turn yet or you have nothing going on in your life that you really care about. When your dog dies or your mom or dad and you get the news at work, please, go ahead and cry. And if I'm your friend feel free to come down the hall and cry in my office and I'll give you a hug 🤗.

My stress manifests as anger, so no.

like

Yes, just recently. Purely a cry about work related stress and anxiety. I’m a six year lot associate fyi.

like

Lit associate* “lot associate” just describes my workload.
Also it was by myself during work from home, so in my living room.

like

No

like

No. I usually just scream at my computer and then go back to work. I don’t have time to cry

like

Again, female here but you can continue to work with tears dripping in your coffee.

like

Bunch of times to both.

like

No, it's just work and I've never experienced this inability to have time off or have had to miss many events. But I'm in tax so maybe it's different

No. Can't imagine caring enough to do so. Probably more likely to tell someone to f-off and leave me alone than cry unfortunately.

No lol.

that’s great A33, but why the “lol”?!

like

Nah

No

Yep, have definitely rage-cried before. (Thankfully not in the office; this was at home during a 300-hour month in late 2020.)

No

When should a stub start getting worried about not having much work and low billable hours?
I’ve asked for work but no luck. I know they say this is normal for a stub but when should I start getting worried and consider looking for exit options? Fyi, I like my practice group, so I don’t want to change to a different group within my firm, hence would have to lateral, if I have to. Also, other co-1st years are churning in high hours.

like

I lateraled into a niche practice group in Sept 2021. I also have a 1 year old and have been mostly remote since I started - but have been keeping busy tracking towards 2400-2500 hours. That said getting to know people only remote has been kind of awkward at times (email only can be tough to decipher) although as a working mom the pros vastly outweigh the cons. Yesterday my main partner asked me to come in Thursday bc he will be there and set a time to meet. Is this good/bad?? kind of nervous!

Hi boys & girls!

Joined a big firm (Big4) not long a go and starting to feel like I got a good grip on my current work.

I've always been very technical, so I think that the only thing I am missing now is making sales. (I really wanna make partner)

Can any seasoned lawyer share tips and materials (i.e. books) which can help?

Would it be a good idea to join a Social Club where potential clients spend time? (gym/tennis/paddel/events)

Any advice welcome!

First year associate and I may barely hit 1500 this year. Requirement is 2000, though i know first and some second years at my firm don’t hit it.

I am a in a small specialist group who has 2 partners, and they both give me work. One of them said to not worry about my hours (though they do not know how low of a number i’m projected for). Haven’t asked the other.

Should I be concerned?

I had to eat a lot of class years when joining big law. I didn’t go T14, didn’t get a summer job in big law, had to work my way up and finally got here. I’m at a great firm doing the exact work I like doing. Now, all around me, colleagues who graduated with me or after me are getting promoted and I’m still a long ways away. They all deserve it. But I can’t help but feel jealous and angry about the uncertainty ahead of whether I’ll make it there and how long it will take. Can anyone relate?

How do you bill your time? The busier I am the harder it is to bill. How do people actually bill contemporaneously in detailed terms when you bill 12 hours but literally did 100 different things in those 12 hours. And it’s never slow enough to go back and do it super detailed.
