Mid 20s working at a mode sized fee-based firm. I’m a bit of a busy body and took my CFP out of a college and recently passed the CIMA - what should be a next step for career progression? Is it best just to leverage the resources around me and learn more about the actual ins and outs or to continue on with more “formal” education?

Leverage your resources! I got my MBA and it didn’t get me any farther ahead in my career. I have my CFP and won’t be getting any more designations. There are so many designations and I feel like the CFP is the most prominent/important.

Sounds like you need a bit more actual on-the-job experience to decide what you actually want to do. Don't rush it. Just use this time to explore different areas that interest you

Thank you for the insight!

What is your ideal role? Successful wealth advisor with a large book or more on the portfolio management side? If the latter, I would invest the time in the CFA designation. If you are looking to work directly with clients as an advisor, I would invest that time working on sales and relationship skills, spending time meeting people more people/prospective clients, developing centers of influence, etc.

^ this is probably the place I might need the most attention in. I find myself somewhat addicted to “positive stress”, the structure and anxiety of working towards an overarching goal combined with the lack of responsibility outside of work (no wife/kids, rent don’t own a home) influencing me more towards cranking out higher level education to make up for some of the lack of life experience.

A friend is considering deferring an offer (stem PhD) for 1 year straight out of undergrad to work in NY, either in a research institution or a biotech. She does not have any real work experience outside of her lab (3 years) and an adjacent internship. Another factor is she is just generally feeling burnt out on school after the last few years.
To what extent did you find that a year or two of work impacts prospects coming out of PhD? How might a year off from school impact her PhD work itself?

Guys,
Need some suggestions.
Currently I am working in TCS Kolkata with 6.8lpa, technology - Exchange 2010 (which is already out of support from Microsoft).
I got an offer from Infosys Bhubaneswar with 9.3lpa, technology: Office 365.
My hometown is Kolkata.
Hybrid model is okay for me if it is Bhubaneswar as my in-laws won't allow me to move to a different city. Problem is opportunities are very less in Kolkata and TCS won't hire ex- employees. Should I switch to Infosys or stay back in TCS..

Any tips for moving up in a medium/large-sized legal department, aside from switching companies? Does where you get your masters degree matter? I’m in an online environmental science masters program at an expensive “name-brand” school, but have colleagues telling me I should transfer to a less expensive program to save $ because no one cares about where your degree is from. Aside from the cost of it, I like my program, and the fact that I’m now connected to an incredible alumni network. And not gonna lie, I like the clout. Thoughts?
