That’s a terrible decision by the leadership and attendance should not be required or encouraged. That should happen during the week, similar to any business travel.
Requiring me to attend weekend functions, especially on Saturdays is a great way to push me out.
I mean they should make it a weekday in the first place as to not compromise the weekends of those of us who do enjoy weekends off. However, if it's twice a year I could always make an exception. Not that hard.
What's with work retreats anyway? It’s just not in my makeup to want to sing kumbaya by a fire with coworkers. Hard pass.
My company is doing something like this next week only that it's during business hours and in our office. Still, I’m not looking forward to this at all, I won’t be participating.
I hate those events and yeah, if you don't go it looks really bad. But if you do your job well and have a decent excuse (have to care for a family member etc), you can get out of it and keep your job.
For my new job, I was extremely upfront about not wanting to attend in-person events at my interviews. One of my interviewers even mentioned utilizing the hybrid option for an event, which made me feel much better. Since then, I've gotten a new manager who didn't get any of this info. Quite frankly, I'm not sure how to handle the situation.
I once attended a weekend work retreat with 15 of my coworkers. It wasn't mandatory but I just wanted a feel of the experience. One of my worst mistakes to date. I was overstimulated and by the end of it, I was ready for a mental breakdown. Everyone was carrying on completely fine, and I felt very overwhelmed. If you have the option of not attending, I'd suggest that you don't.
If it's not mandatory, then there's nothing to worry about. Technically speaking, there should be no problem at all. But the thing is, they might think negatively about you.
Don't stress yourself too much about it. Go if you are comfortable. Don't if you're not. It is not required after all.
I always grab opportunities like these. Mandatory or not, I will always join.
You might be right after all. I've never had any fun memory of retreats and all that. Well, it's really up to you.
Nah! They are the worst! I'm not trying to scare you but that's what I've experienced.
