If you’re well liked, high performer, and meeting your utilization target I think you’re just in your head about it.
If you were a year past promotion target, on the bench for extended amounts of time, and generally “working from home” but literally doing nothing then I would be concerned.
Thank you!
If the layoffs are happening, they usually let go of the people at the top first (managers, senior managers etc.) since they earn the most. You should be good in my opinion

Happens by team usually. Low-performing / low potential areas go out first. The really good folks in those teams may be given a chance to find another team if it’s a large firm, else no such opportunity either.
As assurance, line up another offer during maternity leave.

How many layoffs are we talking about? Is this a few people here and there or do you think the business is in serious trouble?
With a baby do in the spring I assume you’re still early in the pregnancy and haven’t told anyone yet? Also as an analyst I’m assuming relatively junior in tenure?
If I were you I would probably wait it out for a few months and then let HR know you’re pregnant and likely will be taking leave in early spring. It’s a bit Machiavellian, but that might actually protect you since a big firm would likely be leery of letting someone who is a high performer go when they know they are pregnant.
Of course if you feel comfortable that no more layoffs are coming a few months from now you could just let it ride out like normal.
Correct, it’s still early so haven’t told anyone at the firm. It’s a smaller, boutique firm of a little over 200 people and they’ve probably laid off 10-20. I think it’s somewhere in the middle, we’re kind of a specialized firm and the business has been impacted a lot by volatility on Wall st and overall market conditions. But it also came off of a couple of really high growth years so some of the cuts is trimming back extra staff and things they were able to do when business was great that they can’t now.
I’m a Senior Associate now so somewhat junior but not the lowest on the totem pole. I also had the same thought that in a weird way telling them I’m pregnant may be in my favor though of course no guarantees. Thanks for the input!
I would report pregnancy sooner rather than later. As soon as you report the pregnancy, you become part of a protected group. Companies don’t want to risk a lawsuit by laying off a pregnant woman.

Are you sure there’s a min employment period before taking maternity leave? I don’t know the answer but sounds illegal. I thought it was federally required to provide the leave.
Yes, at least for paid leave. You can take unpaid FMLA leave whenever though I think. A few companies don’t have that requirement but most that I’ve looked at do.
Did you tell them you‘re pregnant yet? If lay you off at least in Europe this would be a massive lawsuit and brand damage for the company…
Btw EY got rid of the mandatory 1 year for maternity leave recently if I‘m not mistaken
Good to know about EY, something to look into thank you! And no, I haven’t told them yet as its still somewhat early in the pregnancy
Make sure you communicate your pregnancy and intended time off now. You are unlikely to be a layoff target due to the risk of lawsuit. If there are mass layoffs under which you’d be included, I would expect a good severance.
Also, considering applying to law schools this cycle so I feel like it wouldn’t be a great look to join a new firm, then take mat leave, and possibly quit just a few months after coming back from leave?
