My hourly rate is tiny, so I recently asked for a raise. My manager turned it down, saying that tips are supposed to make up the difference in wages. The problem is that we recently launched a new menu that hasn't gone over well with customers, so my tips have dropped significantly. Is it common for restaurants to use tips as a reason to deny raises? Even when business is slow and tips are inconsistent?
