Start saying “I’m about to clock out, anything you need before I do?”.
Just a personal reminder…if you’re injured while off the clock, worker’s comp is also off the clock.
No just say you'd feel more comfortable doing remaining tasks when on the clock
Like if your getting payed more. Then it shows your late as long they communicate for you. I rather work in the clock afterwards. If they can pay me fine. What sucks my bus stops around 1am. I either have to walk or bike or uber. Or lift.
To your question, yes working and not getting paid for it is illegal. No matter how big or small the task is. If you are doing it for work, you need to be clocked in and getting paid for it.
That extra 10 mins matters. Let’s say you make $25 an hour. That 10 mins of free labor = around $75/month or $1,083/year.
$75 is an entire bill for some people. Don’t let them steal that from you.
Many companies that I have worked for will write YOU up for working off the clock, as it’s a liability to them. It’s on you to protect yourself by making sure all hours are logged.
Before I leave, I always ask my boss “anything else you need before I clock out?”
If I’m already clocked out and he needs me, he’ll tell me to clock back in first, or fill out a timesheet adjustment form.
Your boss should know better than to ask for even a minute of free labor. Think of it like this, if corporate asks why you are violating company policy and working off the clock, what defense do you have? What proof to back up your claim? It’s kind of hard to prove a verbal conversation. Ultimately, YOU signed the employee handbook and attendance policy, so you’ll be the one on the hook.
Just point out that you don't mind the task, but you had already punched out.
Chief
As others have said. Check in with your manager before you clock out. As if there is anything they need done before you punch out and leave.
I would definitely tell them it adds up over a year as lost wages
Ok and so whats the big deal? If it takes 5 or ten mins, do it and leave, stop being so exacting with your time and then left right away aftee this or just say you really cant you have an appointment or something and hurry away but do not bring it up to them at all.
Tell them I'm sorry but I need to leave on time because of your transport times.
