I don't have a nanny, but it feels fairest in my head that she be paid for the duration of the work trip, not just 'on' hours.
Maybe reach out to the nanny / au pair community online. Maybe you can get a feel for it by searching for the same level of effort on care.com or something?? I like the idea of a flat rate or “salary” and then cover her room and food up to a certain amt.
I dont have a nanny either but my initial thought is it would be something more than her "on hours" in addition to meals, her own room, etc.
Perhaps whatever you come up ask her for her feedback so its fair and no resentment for both sides.
Does she usually live in your home/stay over or just comes over each day
This sounds like a fixed fee project
Pay for all expenses and what the normal daily pay rate is.
When we travel with our au pair, it’s essentially moving the whole operation. So, like at home, we pay for her room and meals, and she gets paid for the hours she works. If she doesn’t join us for meals, then we don’t pay for them.
My wife used to be in this situation, she got paid for 24 hours each day as she was on call. Vacation days can be longer and harder than normal days. You also need to keep in mind this is your vacation, not your nanny’s, they are working. Yes you are paying flights and hotels but again this is like a work trip for them and those should be paid for.
Best to have a conversation about but I would think it is more than normal.
I was thinking of paying for her room, all hours worked, food, and then like $50 hours extra for the time she is just relaxing by the pool or sleeping. That fair?
It seems like if you don't have a prior agreement a couple things I would consider:
- Realistically is this a work only trip for her, e.g., are you going to see your family, a kids only vacation like Disney land, or a work trip to a mid to smaller city?
- Could she have declined the trip, if her normal hourly wage isn't enough for her to want to give up a week/weekend
- Would this be across a weekend or a normal time off for her, i.e., if she was a normal hourly worker she would be well into overtime
If any of those are true, I think you should pay minimum of 2X normal rate or for 24 hours/day, whichever is less.
If you are going someplace awesome, where it is likely they will truly be vacationing on their own on the off hours, you could consider paying only for hours worked and vacation expenses. But if any of the above three are true, honestly even if she isn't directly supervising your kids, she isn't doing what she wants with her time and you should pay her.
And lesson learned, you should negotiate these things at hiring so everyone is clear on the conditions of employment.
Agree with SM1 just agree on a single amount and don’t fret about hours
