I believe if you take more than 28 days then you need extra layers of approval. That’s the guide I use.
Coach
So it sounds like 28 days is our limit for "unlimited PTO" then
Former WS employee here - I saw someone below said something about 28 days needing extra layers of approval, and I feel like it was less than that, at least in the region I worked in (Central). It depends a lot on your team, but within the last year they were definitely putting in more guardrails around approvals, and if you were trying to take off more than 5 consecutive days it required additional levels of approval. I think I usually ended up taking between 2-3 weeks after the switch to "unlimited" PTO (or FTO, as they call it),
Coach
If they are pseudo capping it anyway then why did they switch to this model?
Do you have an MBA by chance?
Coach
do YOU by chance?
Our average is 2 to 3 weeks for those who have the supposedly unlimited PTO. I've never seen anyone take over three weeks and it would be a little bit controversial if someone tried.
Coach
I feel like 3 weeks is pretty standard. Its is considered controversial to try more.
I don't have unlimited and I get 2 weeks off during the year plus holidays. So, I would take as you need, but be careful and mindful of your responsibilities and the teams' needs
Coach
Yeah two weeks feels like the absolute minimum.
How many YOE do you have? If you're in a junior position, I'd stay on the lower end - maybe 2 weeks. If you're more experienced, I'd say 3. This is one of the many reasons I hate the idea of unlimited PTO policies. I'd much rather have clarity on how many days I can take each year.
Coach
I've recently joined Weber and am at 9 years. I'm trying to ask around a bit but don't want to come off as THAT person.
Check in with your coworkers and see what they take, because unlimited PTO is often really dependent on the culture of the company.
Coach
Glad it sounds like you have a pretty good team @WS1
What were you getting at the last place? Take around that much.
Coach
I was at 3 weeks. Which is roughly what I was thinking I would do here but I want to make sure I'm aligned with what others are doing.
I was told 25 days or so is the standard, but 22 is normal for people who haven’t been at Weber very long. I think I took 28 days last year, but I’ve been here more than 4 years. I’m also super billable.
Coach
I definitely think if you're super billable here no one should be complaining if you take time off.
