Not much of a drinker but how impactful are those wine pairing menus to the overall experience of the meal. Does it really elevate the taste of the food?

I’m a big wine guy and I’d say no. The food influences the wine much more than the other way around.
I think the benefit of pairing is that you can get some inexpensive wines to taste great with the right pairing. Or really elevate great bottles.
But if you don’t like wine in the first place, it’s not ruining your cooking not to have any

like

It’s game changing to me because I love drinking wine. But it doesn’t really affect my opinions of the food that much

I agree with that, I’m by no means the most sophisticated drinker, it’s just more of a fun extra thing to me. I have had some really interesting pairings, but nothing that I felt were make or break by the accompanying drink.

like

No, not really. Wine, or any beverage, should be enjoyed on its own merits. To think certain wines go “better” with particular dishes, beyond basic wine types/styles, is merely a snobbish element trying to establish exclusivity.

like

Appreciate the honesty. I was honestly expecting a lot more comments saying yes you need the wine pairing.

I guess I'm the odd one out here, but I totally think it elevates the entire experience to have well-paired wine and food. I think that if you get the right pairing they complement each other so well and you end up enjoying the food and the wine more. Maybe I'm just drinking the koolaid on this one (no pun intended) but I really do think it makes a difference!

I wonder if this is too hard to describe in words but what is the difference like? Does it make you feel like this is now the best way to eat that particular dish.

I am a wine drinker but I would say no.I really don't feel like it elevates the taste of the food. I prefer to drink a wine that I like with my meal rather than something they suggest that will go good with the meal anyhow.

Anyone looking at traveling to Costa Rica? They have a list of states from which they will admit tourists while also requiring a negative covid test, health history, etc. As someone not on the approved list, I am bitter and curious why the population is grouped at a state level when there are massively different rates of infection within each state (not to mention personal responsibility) and you are already required to present a negative test. Any idea how often those lists get updated?
