The more you stay in consulting , the more difficult it will be for you to move to a tech company in a tech role. If you want to do tech work , stay in tech. If not, then go to consulting.
So you want to spend your life to ensure younger generations get addicted to mobile apps, spending hours and hours, all to peddle ads?
Which McKinsey partner am I speaking to right now😭 they have whole books on the evils of McKinsey - I can talk about advising private prisons to feed guard dogs on more irregular schedules to heighten their aggression if you want another McKinsey example.
I’m in consulting too and it’s all the same soulless corporate crap. I can assure you no consulting firm, McKinsey included, would put morals above a massive payout from an unethical project.
Go consulting, upskill to all hell while you’re there. Gain all the skills you are looking for , roll over to tech once you’re comfortable with your updated skill sets
Need to be clear on the future. You can always try consulting for 1-2 years and then go to tech (roles always there). Reverse is not as easy
Agree. Big tech doesn't want MBB. Not sure the other way. Maybe both are hard. It's like saying should I be a doctor now or a lawyer. I guess it's easier being a doctor first? Probably true but both difficult
Go tech if you see yourself in tech long term- you can always come back into consulting. If you would want to work in any other industry (e.g., finance), then go consulting.

You need to understand yourself a bit more to make this decision. What does progress mean for you right now? Why did you apply to both roles? Forget the 5 or 10 year plan, just try to understand what gives you energy, and how you’re trying to grow in the next year. If you need help with the self-discovery, happy to share tools that can help get you unstuck.
If you want to be in tech go straight in.
