When it’s time to get lunch, I ask if anyone wants to walk with me. Or same thing if I want to get a coffee. And then when we’re walking I ask them about their weekends, or if they have fun plans coming up, etc. to see if I have anything in common with that person to build on
On the other hand, it’s not like I’m going to schedule a follow up just to chat if we don’t need to work on something. I’m having 1:1s with people, but what to do after that to work on the relationship?
You really have two questions here. The first is how do you initiate a connection with someone and the second is how do you then build a relationship. I thought K1’s answer was perfect for the initiating question. I will say that as an introvert I build relationships one on one and have fewer of them but the connections I do have run deeper. The “building” question takes investment of time, following up on common interests, helping them achieve their goals, and commitment over time. That is why I have fewer - I know I am not an acquaintance guy and all that follow up takes energy!
Find someone who for one reason or another seems interesting, shares something in common with you, or otherwise looks approachable. Ask them how the are doing. Get to know them little by little. Smile, make eye contact, and be genuine.
