200-250?
That is not high at all for HCOL.
I would say the average plateau would be $125k. Gotta think about all the people you started with who pivoted out of accounting into even less lucrative industries and won’t likely ever top 100k
You can be fairly average and make manager and earn $125k as M1 in big 4 HCOL. Thats severely underestimating the earning power.
Max for tax director of specialty practice would be $300K (average is mid 200s). If you make it to managing director, would be over $300K but not sure what the cap is.
I know it’s less but I don’t have any direct knowledge. Keep in mind that you typically start out younger in assurance and have more exit options outside of big4 so one is not necessarily better than the other- just different.
I’m a SM at EY and I make 350k
What’s service line are you in and what do you do?
Also curious, especially for big 4 tax.
If your goal is to be a non partner/MD you probably will top out at Director/Senior manager depending on the firm. You are probably looking at 180k-220k at that level with a slight cost of living (1% or so) each year once you max out at the end of the salary band. I work with a couple of SMs that have no interest in progressing past for personal reasons.
Depends when you cap out. I know folks not on partner track may not make it to MD and therefore sit at senior manager and be a career SM. I’d say roughly $190-220If you don’t make SM and you sit at manager for a while, probably cap out around $170 (but would sit in the $130 to $150 range for a while). Of course could be higher or lower based on city and service, but just a guess.
Would be higher if you make md/Ed. They would probably be over 300
For Audit, a lot of people move into controller roles or even CFO roles, so the ceiling is theoretically pretty high (from a naïve A1 perspective tho).
When I graduated school, tons of our more succesful alumni started at B4 and pivoted elsewhere. These are the people that had there names on buildings. Obviously thats not the case with everyone tho
