One isn't better than another. They are simply different. Everyone has their personal preference and that ok. In fact, it's great. There is something for everyone. Everyone needs to spend the time to figure out what they want from a career. Then pick the profession and job that matches what they want and enjoy. Sounds pretty simple (maybe easier said than done).
I have never wanted a job in private. I have never seen one that interested me or even remotely seemed appealing. Some people feel the way I do and others think I'm nuts and they can't stand PA.
My recommendation is for everyone to figure out what they enjoy. Don't linger for years in a profession you don't like (and then complain like crazy and ruin it for others) . Step up and move on to something you do enjoy!
I left private to go public. That was a mistake. Totally better.
I left big 4 for BT. Worst decision ever.
Grass is lime green and watered throughout the week over here.
Left big 4 after 5 years for a F500 job and a 33% raise
Best decision I’ve made to date
I left one firm for another and it’s been the best decision I’ve ever made.
For me it's better. But be very careful what you sign up for. I know people who are not happy with their new jobs, but me personally I'm happy. Never sign up for a job just for the $.
Left for a financial reporting role with a public company. Enough going on to keep it interesting but also predictable enough that I have a life again. So I’m saying better!
I think it’s going to depend on a combination of the position and company you’re leaving for honestly If the grass is greener or not.
I agree with Partner 1, everyone has their preferences. I couldn’t stand my commute to Hartford, I hated the atmosphere at my Big Four firm, I also quickly found out I wasn’t a fan of tax, and the main reason most people leave PA: I wanted my life back. Working in private/industry is a lot better and more flexible, but definitely has some downfalls. I went from having almost 30 days off for PTO time in PA to having the standard 2 weeks like most jobs. I took a decrease in salary, but for an entry level position, that’s expected and should be ok with you. Plus my decrease wasn’t terrible anyways. I may not enjoy accounting still, but at least the company and atmosphere I work in now makes me come into work with a smile on my face for once. I also have the option to audit and work with other processes and departments so I have opportunities to try out new positions and grow with my company. But that’s my personal story. Some people actually hate private/industry and go back to PA. It’s all about what you want! Overall, the grass is much greener for me so I’m thankful for that.
Went private and it was horrible. I was 25, no kids with lots of ambition although paid well in private. I came back to public 3 years later and I’m much happier!
Private is leaps and bounds better for me.
