If the car is only 23k I doubt the dealer will accept AMEX for payment. My luxury car dealer only accepts it for up to $8k for down payment and that's on an $85k vehicle.
Enthusiast
This was my experience as well. They will cap it, especially Amex since fee to them is high.
That’s what I did for the down payment. Easy way to hit your 6k spend for your intro miles.
My dealer wouldn't let me, insisted on check.
8k is what I paid using CC and put the rest on personal check
Mercedes only let me charge up to $5K on my CSR for the deposit. ~120k car
Lol, TL1. D1 is correct. I’m a senior associate in biglaw and my base comp is 400k (HHI 610).
If tried this at various dealers for various amounts, no one has ever allowed it
I feel like most businesses will charge you a few to use a card. Is that different for cars?
Do it for the points if the dealership accepts it. Usually they don’t, Amex is so expensive on the merchant side.
Pro
Most dealers won't accept a credit card, and those that do often charge 2-4% processing fee.
Rising Star
Very hard to find a dealer who will do this. Mine did allow me to put $18k on mine but said it was a huge exception (height of covid well before cars were a hot commodity)
Yes
If you can, but as others have mentioned many don’t let you. I’ve bought two cars since I got my plat 8 years ago, and both times they only let me pay the down payment on the CC.
