There are simply no head of strategy roles around — those roles are really dependent on new biz and there just isn’t any these days. Best thing you can do is tap your network and try to find anything in the strategy space. You may need to relocate, too. If that’s not an option, it might be time to retool. This industry is brutal, it’ll spit you out at some point
Yeah I took a head of strategy role but did not last - my last role before that was VP/strategy Director. I’ve been looking for a VP/strategy Director roles and just not finding anything. I’ve also reached out to CSO’s I’ve worked with and you are right they’re not that many openings. Unfortunately can’t relocate I have two teenagers in high school. But thank you I’ll keep tapping into my network thank you so much
Something is not working. Have you tried working with a career coach? In this environment, landing your story and making yourself indispensable is so important. I’ve gone through dry spells and gone through periods where I’ve had my pick from multiple jobs. The dry spells were due to lack of confidence or not having my story down. But when I felt good and felt so confident I could do the job, I landed the big jobs. The
Thank you!!!
Have you aged out? (Serious question). Whether it’s actual age or the amount you make…
It could be the amount I make but I’m now actually looking for less money because it’s been so long I just need to find something. I don’t think I’ve aged out necessarily because I look young no one can guess my age and I remove some of my experience off of my resume and I don’t have the year in my education
Yeah.. at a certain age/ level people start their own consultancies. I would definitely at least pivot to freelancing. Like look at Tom Morton.. trying to think of others. Maybe smaller markets via McCann like McCann Detroit.

Agree it’s worth exploring. If you haven’t already been taking on consulting/freelance gigs I would get 2 or 3 projects under your belt - that will make you feel busy/relevant and take any focus off the fact you’ve been looking for a while
I am in the same boat, sadly and it’s not for want of strategizing. Laid off March 2024 and have paid for a couple of resume and recruitment training, did a lot of networking and attended events. Meditated, exercised, morale building exercises, and even landed several interviews, and had one offer, for which unfortunately we couldn’t negotiate mutually agreeable work arrangements. Granted, I am a seasoned professional who attracts a higher pay scale, but have never had this dearth in job offers. I’m used to having my choice of offers. It’s just an odd time. I’m aware of colleagues having the same experience. Look into joining industry associations and expand your network outreach. Learn new (AI) skills. And most important, keep believing in your worth! Your time will come!
Same! My severance ran out in March 20 24 so the same boat as you… I have not paid for any resume over recruitment training but exactly the same as you I always had job offers or recruiters and if I left one place I always had another place I think the most I had not worked maybe a few months?
OK I hope you and everyone find something soon. I don’t know if it is the current administration, or the attack on DEI, I don’t know what it is but I’ve never experienced it this bad ever and I’ve been doing this a long time
I’m not sure strategic planning at a consumer agency is something that is going to exist in a year, or a skill that’s transferable outside of this industry. Although this minimizes what you do, for the sake of space, a lot of strategic planners, I have seen simply plugged questions into Siemens, went to the same focus groups. The clients did, and now use chat and other forms of AI. These are things clients can do themselves. There’s really no reason anymore why they should pay so much money for strategic planners on their accounts. If push really comes to shove, you might want to start thinking about a different career altogether rather than going through the agony of only looking at ones that your skills as a strategic planner carryover to. Someone I know who was an executive producer and an agency for 25 years, and someone else I know who was an award-winning copywriter for 10 years, are both working respectively as a life, insurance agent, and as a restaurant manager. This industry is going away as we know it. Rather than claw and struggle and be sad, trying to stay in it, freedom and positivity might come from leaving the entire industry altogether.
Are you consulting/freelancing? If not, I’d highly recommend you start doing some actual work.
Having such a large gap on the resume will deter a lot of recruiters. You’re best pivoting to your own thing until you can land something full time.
