One other thing I should say about this situation. In the last 6 months I’ve seen a lot of FB posts by associates (and a few by others) asking about how much certain firms pay, whether people get window offices, how “prestigious” firms are, profits per partner, etc. But I don’t ever remember seeing a post asking about how well managed a particular firm was, or expressing interest in the abilities of law firm managers generally. Now, as in 2008, and 2001, and 1987, good management really matters, especially to the associates and staff members who lack significant personal assets and whose month to month livelihood therefore depends on their firm’s ability to weather an epic storm without dramatic cost cutting measures. Many firms that distributed every cent at year-end 2019 are in deep trouble right now, as are firms that carry a lot of debt or otherwise were managed without regard to the risk of a downturn. Firms that have healthy cash reserves, no or low debt, and significant open credit lines are not. If you’re in a healthy firm, please make a point to thank members of your management team for their foresight. And whatever your current situation, remember this moment when you’re thinking about joining a new firm. Ask how its management handled this crisis. And remember that sometimes chasing every last dollar in good times is a recipe for problems in less than good times.
This is super true. The firms that are going to be hurting right now are the lower Amlaw100 who trued to keep up with the big dogs salary-wise but don't have the same revenue as those further up the rankings. I saw this a few years ago at two firms I was at--one was well managed and the other simply wasn't. Do good work, save what you can and try to ride it out.
As long as you still have work to bill for, I wouldn't get stressed out.
We are in uncharted waters but if you’re busy that’s a very good sign. For March my V25 firm is on plan for collections and very nearly on plan for fee value added, which surprises me given the jolts we all have endured in the last month but also shows what’s possible when we all bear down and keep our focus on the horizon. So, control what you can control - work hard and well, take care of yourself and your loved ones, and follow public health guidance. Beyond that worrying can’t and won’t help.
When the COVID-19 stuff took off, the partners held a meeting and told us that we had plenty of cases and business goes on as usual with obligatory WFH options. I’ve heard as-yet unconfirmed rumblings from friends in other firms that the Md. Court of Appeals could close courts through early May later today or sometime this week.
All of this to say that, as the most junior associate, I’m terrified of lay-off possibilities. I started here exactly a month ago and LOVE this firm. So far, I’ve remained billable as usual, and am currently working under four different partners in three different practice groups with consistent assignments. When drafting work is done, I have multiple extensive doc review projects to do for trials that aren’t scheduled until late September. Lots of these cases, especially doc review, are for clients companies with fairly deep pockets. Based on the firm size and case assignments, how concerned should I be if courts close completely through May or even early June?
Maryland courts are likely to be closed through mid May
