Pre or Post-Sales... Is the grass greener? I.e. Solutions consultant/sales engineer (pre-sale) VS. customer success manager/solutions architect (which can be either)? By greener, I mean career trajectory prospects, earning potential, future viability to move in other roles, and overall stress / WLB? I am asking this as someone relatively junior still with 3+ YOE in management consulting who is looking to shift into a sales adjacent role in tech.

Pre-sales is better for earning potential, visibility, and usually more room to grow. Post-sales has a more predictable WLB and better route to sales. You’ll find pros and cons in each. I would agree with finding what you are naturally better at and focusing there.

Pre sales is the best imo. Post sales is often lower pay, and you deal with the bad parts of customer management. Pre sales is often higher risk, higher quotas, more variable pay.

Pre sales can move to pure sales roles, to product, etc.

Post sales has a harder path to getting to pure sales roles, but not super limited to career path IMO. Just depends on what you’re good at

I’ve been a club performing rep for years at a SaaS company…but as an enterprise account exec… my average deal size is around $75k in annual recurring, quota of $1M. This is inline for my company but low when I speak with others for Enterprise rep openings. Any thoughts on recommendations for steps to bridge that gap?
