I'd suggest doing what you don't absolutely hate, for a living. Life is short, hating your job is such a horrible way to live. Maybe it will mean making less money. Maybe it won't. I try to live my life like someone who got a second chance at life, as if I got a life-threatening disease. Except I didn't. I am not going to wait for a wake-up call. I found something I actually enjoy. I hope you do too.
Love this, C1. OP, recommend reading Designing your Life
I don’t know one person who wakes up everyday and says ,” Yep, this is exactly what I want to do forever.” I’m 34, a consultant, in school and double majoring in psychology and computer science, a dad, a husband, and a friend. I recently just switched positions for my daughter and took a 20k pay-cut. On paper I was devastated but, somehow I’ve ended up making almost the same money with this new company. The point of that isn’t to say, “hey, look at everything I do. This is how to be happy.” But I truly wasn’t happy and decided to start doing something about it. You only get one life my friend, if something’s not working then take some time and figure it out. I don’t know about you but I do a lot of praying and I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention I have alway had a lot of faith in God. Now, when I look at my life, I see proof because there’s no way I could’ve done all of this on my own. I hope this helps in someway and good luck!! Truly!
Find a life outside of work
This. I got trapped in a well paying remote role that gave no pleasure, human connection or emotional reward. I've reduced my hours and brougt my quality of life up by actually having one 🙂
Dear Consultant, such questions often cross my mind as well. I am in somewhat similar situation. I suggest to continue to stay in Financial industry. With your diverse experience in financial setting, I suggest to do look through any certification you can take to give you some clarity. In between ask yourself where you will confident, presenting or doing back end work.
I am taking additional accounting courses on Coursera and hoping to take CPA while maintaining responsibilities in 40's and steering my carreer not just for a pay check.
There’s a book Mastery by Robert Greene, can look up a summary but relevant advice on career choices
