I'd book where they're booking. Cost plays a big part, if SPG is a cheaper option you look good suggesting that... If not... Well you just look like the person who doesn't care about the expenses
One is Hilton and one is some no chain hotel 😒 and it's just client and me from my base
You don't want to start on a bad note so I'd say just do it

If your preferred hotel is both close by and cheaper, go for it. You're saving the client money, you big hero!
It's a difficult one. When this happened to me I looked for options myself and then let the client know. Of course... I did try to make the case for staying at SPG. It depends on the city though

Well I should mention I just started a project too so I feel like I should just do it...
I settled on doing same flights but spg hotels, as they are actually cheaper and located couple blocks away... Never travelled with client by myself. Do I need to entertain them too?...
I think you're thinking too much into it... Everyone has their own preferences on how they live outside of work so if you have a preference for whatever reason to stay at a dif hotel (costs aside assuming it's not a crazy expensive hotel) it should be fine. Sounds like the client wanted to stay together but I don't think u should have to explain yourself if you decided a different option and if the client is polite they won't ask. Maybe you need some random in room facility that one had and the other didn't.... Who knows..
I also wouldn't worry so much about costs and seeming like the person doesn't care... We have a policy that international flights are business class.. So it could be awkward if you're traveling with a client and he goes right and you go left.... But that's firm policy!
Well it is Canada, so the business class policy doesn't apply, but given my status I won't be sitting next to client anyway... They want to leave at stupid time too but I ll accommodate that as it's just me and client lead
