I don’t like ambiguous “catch up” requests. If I know you’re laid off, it gives me a moment to think about how I could help before talking and I can come to the table with that. Otherwise The whole first ten minutes of small talk before you get to the point is inefficient.

On the other hand, a cold email telling me you've been laid off gives the impression that you expect me to conjure up a role for you immediately.
I agree that the request shouldn't be vauge or ambiguous. Be clear that you are reaching out because you're looking for a new role and want guidance. Why you're looking for a new role isn't necessary in your introduction.
I was laid off as well. I would open my LinkedIn message with - I was laid off and I need your help - type messaging.
Starting a new job in a week! No more consulting - yey!!
A1 - I was laid off in June. Took 3 months to get an offer. It’s very hard out there right now because of the number people competing for the same jobs.

C1s comment is not wrong but I also think you can phrase it in a way that is still to the point but not necessarily saying you’ve been laid off. Are you asking for a favor or are you introducing this person to someone (you) who would be a good fit for their company?
You could say something like you’re “looking for your next move”, “think you’ll be a good fit for XYZ job”, etc. This way you can make it clear what you’re after. I don’t think it’s wrong to say you’ve been laid off but I think it would change the tone for me receiving a note like that from someone who is proactive about reaching out to make their next career move (eager, go-getter) versus someone who’s only reaching out because they’re currently unemployed.
Hope that makes sense. Best of luck to you regardless! You can always try a few different ways and see where you get more traction.
I agree with the above addons , but as a former laid off person myself - There’s straight up urgency to this depending on your situation. It’s up to you how clear you are in your chats but I found it better to not beat around the bush because one month can easily turn into 3 or 6. People out there are willing to help, but they help faster if they know your urgency.
Don’t say that because then they’ll know you’re a low performer... wait till you get another job and let your boss find out on his own that you’re a low performer.
I'm sorry your parents didn't love you, but this really isn't the place.
