That's tough. I could see how it would make you feel pretty anxious. It's really not easy to prepare for something like that other than to have your resume updated and to keep your eyes open for potential job opportunities.
Knowing that it's a possibility helps you mentally prepare because it's not like discovering that something happened to you when you didn't even know it was on the table. However, making sure that you have some money saved and your resume updated in case you need it... those are some tangible ways to prepare, just in case. Hopefully, you don't have to worry about it!
I've been asking myself the same thing. I think I might run away to a new country if I got laid off, especially if it happened without warning.
I think you have to be somewhere in the middle. Be hopeful that it doesn't happen to you, but you have to be mentally prepared as well that you could be next. I guess having backup plans will ease some of your worries.
If you’re concerned, start signing up for job notifications on LinkedIn in your field and update your resume and cover letter (template). That way, you can gauge the market and have something ready if an unfortunate layoff happens.
