Recently, my boss has become critical, focusing on my mistakes. Despite my efforts, I feel nothing I do is enough. I’m also struggling with monotony in my work, leading to a lack of motivation and fulfillment. My anxiety is at its peak, and after frequent job changes over three years, I’m questioning my fit in this profession. Despite excelling outside work and being a rockstar in my first job, my confidence is shattered. How can I overcome this and regain my confidence?

You need to start developing more mental hardening, and realize time is the factor that you can’t buy on experience.

Work on the anxiety triggers. You’re heading towards burnout. The legal field sucks, because compensation sucks all around. Finance is better.

Definitely been there. Hang in there. I did until I got Covid. Was toxic as hell. I pulled some fabulous wins. Still got micromanaged. Funny enough the very things I would try to advocate for in briefs ended up as the reason for partial denial from judges. Still got the same critical treatment. Hang in there as long as you can. Then switch there are better firms there. You will make it to one of these places.

I have a deadline to respond to a Motion for SMJ in 1 1/2 weeks. I just found out that my grandparents who I haven’t seen since the start of the pandemic will visit this week. I clearly don’t want to misstate anything but is there some general, vague language that can be used?

I work in a firm that is known for litigation defense. I’ve been developing my own plaintiffs practice as well. I am able to pay the bills with my hourly defense work, which gives me time to focus on a handful of high value PI case a year on contingency. I was recently negotiating a case and was told part of the reason the claims rep/OC was jerking me around was because they didn’t see me as a plaintiffs attorney. Is there any way to change this perception or does it just come over time?

Is there anyone on here who’s switched sides - from defense to plaintiff - and can speak to their experience / general things to think about? I’ve just moved and gone on/going through multiple interview rounds with a big defense firm and a plaintiffs firm doing high verdict litigation (established enough to pay pretty good associate salaries). Not trying to jinx myself before any offers, but I’ve really liked the people at both firms and want to take my time to consider all angles (cont)

It may seem obvious, but in my experience partners value trial experience over anything else, so get it however you can. For example, my firm will favor a former prosecutor who has seen the courtroom a lot but has no civil litigation experience (not even a depo) over a seasoned associate who has only second chaired cases with a partner but hasn’t tried a case. Even trying a case and losing gives you credibility at my firm because you still did it.
