About to head to the HC for a role in ProdOps and Strategy in Mountain View. 4 YoE at MBB, no competing offers. Recruiter gave me a form that asks expected comp.
Levels.fyi has only PM salaries. I haven’t been told the level but expect it to be L4.
What total comp would you expect for this role? Any advice would be super helpful, as I’m a bit lost.

Bay Area is obviously a lot larger and arguably slightly better networking/opportunities. But NYC is not far behind. When we return to normal travel, and with future hybrid work and more people working remote, it’s not a huge difference IMO. It definitely doesn’t matter now with fully remote work.
Culture wise, Bay might be a little more laid back but you also start work earlier and end earlier.
From a living standpoint, depends what you’re looking for.
Personally would never live in the Bay Area over NYC. The traffic, the cost for suburbia, or the trek into the office if you live in the city itself…
NYC is expensive but a lot better in terms of actual things to do, cultural activities, accessibility, etc.
Tough choice, but I'd have to say NYC. Higher concentration of things to do, better food (my opinion only!!), and proximity to things that are significantly different. Bay area is the same for miles and miles, not counting some of the beach towns - but how often are you really going out that way? NYC is a short train ride from all sorts of great things.
Regarding career opportunities and networking, you'll see less tech opportunities in NYC, but a huge volume overall. All of our counterparts have a big presence in NYC as well so it's not like you're leving much on the table. You'll just get to avoid all the new rich startup bois in the bay, trading them out for hedge fund managers :)
Offices are slightly different in culture IMO, MTV more laxed and NYC a little more professional (maybe?) Only other noticeable thing I would mention is that I always used to work longer hours in NY because most of the team sat in the Bay Area. It varies from team to team but from what I’ve noticed, you tend to work less and or log off earlier in the day the farther west you are.
I would never live in the Bay Area again. Not my fit culturally.
