I don’t see a downside risk at your level if the new practice is in area of interest to you and an emerging industry topic.
Worst case scenario is you get short-term exposure to a hot skill and then you can join a team at a bigger firm with more mature practice down the road.

I made the same call 25 years ago. Was a Senior Manager and we were expanding the geographic footprint of our boutique 100 person firm. Took the chance. Betting on myself was one of the best decisions of my life.

Look at his track record, standing in the firm, your experience with him and whether you think the practice has potential and is in line with your interest.
You already know the answer.

In this case you’re not just betting on yourself you’re betting on this guy. Look hard at how well he has done something similar in the past particularly navigating political challenges and adapting his ideas to changing conditions. Some partners leave for better things. Many partners leave because they couldn’t hack it. Consider your upside at PwC heavily - a much more sure thing.
Is there a large addressable market for this new practice, do you or the partner have existing relationships with clients and buyers, do one of you have a track record of closing deal in this space and credibility with clients, what are your firms expectations for growth
