Did they know this when they hired you? Staff figure out quick when they know more than you.
How did you get hired? lol I know seniors can be less experience, but shouldn’t manager position be well experienced?
Provisions are totally different from returns. I would suggest that you work closely with a senior manager to gain the experience. If you are actually in charge of provisions for public companies there is quite a bit of risk involved. Talk to the partner. I am sure he will guide you. If you show you want to learn and are willing to invest time learning, folks will help you.
You can do it.
Honestly sounds like horrible decision by you and the firm. Setting yourself up for failure at this point. Why not joined as senior and see if you can handle provision then get promo. Better than doing a crappy job as manager then get fired or stressed yourself out like crazy. Provision isn’t rocket science but at the same time it’s not easy to learn as well. On top of that you are dealing with learning new provision software as well
You need to get a buddy system going. Everyone starts somewhere and part of bringing you in as a manager level, is that there’s quite a bit you know about tax as well as project management and leading teams. But this is new territory and you’re gonna need some handholding.
You also need to be upfront with your team that this is a new assignment and responsibility for you and you’re gonna be depending on them to walk you through things. If they get annoyed, well, then they can go pound sand. You’re demonstrating is that it’s possible for people to shift roles and not be silo in whatever area they focus on. Your staff should appreciate that there’s opportunities they might not think are realistic down the road. this is pretty common in corporate jobs actually. People get shifted and rotated to get exposure to different things.
I told them during the interview for this Big 4 job that I was looking for provision experience (reason for leaving previous job) so they hired me and let me keep my title. But I was tossed on a ton of provision projects with the expectation to know as much as a manager with years of provision experience would. It does feel like my senior knows more than I do so I feel quite overwhelmed. Is there anything I can do beside potentially ask them for demotion to senior?
Study the big 4 ASC 740 guide books. You can google and find them. Use it as a reference. Read a small portion then see how you’re actually applying that. Do part of the provision and find where in the guide it talks about it. This will help educate academically but then bridge the gap between mere academics and real life application.
Do you have any specific resources you would suggest? I’m thinking of watching some training videos but wondering if there are better options. Thanks!
Agree, I prefer PwC’s guide but also read the guide of whoever the auditor is because sometimes there’s difference of opinion. Important to know the audit firm’s position.
