You shouldn’t regret going for the mba. You should regret whatever you did that got you into the tier 2 consulting firm instead of tier 1. What were you doing lol
20% of my class went to MBB, but half of that were basically sponsored or in international offices.
OP, first - don't regret. Regrets only attract pity, especially from those that don't care much. Second, figure out your ideal role and the next 10 employers you'd like to work for, and start working towards that aim..it may not happen in 1 week or a month or a year, but it may very well happen if you make it your only short term goal. Work towards it my friend.
C1 is exactly right. Target list + Networking= opportunities
You could of been a surgeon with that scale of loan, but the world needs slide jockeys like us as well
Out *of* here
Tier 2 C3, think Deloitte or Moss Adams
Umm sure dude 👨🦰
I’m in your shoes OP, so I feel ya. Like C3 said, we made the best decision with the information available. Never in my wildest dreams did I think my “background” would disqualify me for business-related jobs. A JD qualifies you to practice law and an MD qualifies you to practice medicine; no one cares what you did before that. Not so with an MBA.
It took me 3 years post-MBA to even get an interview with D. And when I did, I still got stuck in their gov’t practice NOT using my MBA and earning 25-35% less than my peers. Between the lower comp and restricted exit ops, yeah, an MBA was a bad idea because the ROI will never materialize.
Right at the end you stumbled onto another possibility you missed in your initial framework ... that maybe the hiring process is broken. Why do we hire from other white collar professions for their transferable skills, but not from blue collar backgrounds? If you work at MBB, is there ANYONE in your office that was blue collar pre-MBA? Even one? If so, I would be honored to have a convo with that person!
Kellogg Professor Lauren Rivera and others have dedicated their careers to researching disparities in the hiring process, particularly among those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. I hope you’ll use this as an opportunity to become an agent for change in our profession. Intellectual curiosity and a passion for client service are just as important - if not more so - than past employers and job titles.

First, find some perspective. Top 5 MBA and top 2 consulting - yes, my heart just bleeds for you.
Second, you probably made the best decision with the knowledge you had at the time.
OP I can see your point but was going into a tier 1 firm your sole objective? I ask bc in my case I had 3 school offers and picked the lowest ranked (top 20). I did bc I liked the people, the program, and honestly been in the underdog category all my life therefore I did not mind. Worked extremely hard to get the offers that I did and yes some there were firms that discounted me bc of my school or background . That said the work, the firm, or the ranking of the school does not define who I am and shouldn’t define you or be a source of regret. Maybe there is a reason you are where you are and that might be because you’ll be and have huge success at that tier 2 and the debt eventually will seem worth it! I am rooting for ya!
Which school?
Could you have? I went to a top 5 MBA -> Tier 2 Consulting. Many of my classmates who recruited for consulting completely struck out. And even at my tier 2, more “slots” were allocated for my alma mater vs a top 15
Sponsored students and international offices where the comp is lower than their American counterparts
I ended up at MBB and feel the same way. My only solace is that most of my classmates have great jobs-likely better than top 15 peers- and have been super generous with their time and referrals as I look for new opportunities. I hope you experience the same if/when you decide to leave
