Second year corporate/ECVC associate (not big law), losing my job for sure next week (long story short I screwed up and I’ve been frozen out ice cold). Started interviewing already, should hear back from a firm next week and have two more interviews as well. Has anyone recovered from being let go while actively searching? How did you handle it?

Been in the strat game for over a decade; I’ve realized that a strong department with clear process that is built on end to end problem solving (with time to think) is when I’m happiest vs this award show / case study grind. What are some agencies you all work or have worked at, that value strategy as a department and not a creative case study farm? Looking to figure out what’s next.

I feel like a failure as a parent at times - my youngest daughter is extremely anxious about middle school and in the first week has already had two emotional breakdowns. She is so worried about people picking on her and not having friends. I have reached out to the counselor and principal with hopes to get her some support in school, but I can’t do anything to make it better. Today opposing counsel contacted me to request an extension of time to file a discovery motion due to current shelter in place orders. Today was the last day to file - no prior effort to m/c. Cont.

Any tips for building a client base from scratch? I’m a 4th year associate at a firm of 12 attorneys. I practice in business, compliance, and real estate (primarily on partners’ files) and don’t litigate. Most of the partners’ clients are wealthy friends or friends of friends (not my circle). Associates are not referred business, even cold calls, and so far “networking” events like Chamber of Commerce luncheons have been a bust. I equate a book to autonomy and career choice and pressure is on.

How do you properly vet a law firm? I feel the associates I speak with talk up the firm and aren’t always candid.

I’m my partners only associate and I went on parental leave two weeks ago. I feel horrible for leaving him to handle our cases alone, but am trying to focus on my wife and new baby. Floored: Filed an appearance (electronically) that was just accepted and noticed OC. Appearing before a reasonable and competent judge. Courtesy notice to judge, not me (and I double-checked, I was copied) from OC starts: “This matter is set for...” No greeting to the judge whatsoever. Has WFH or no personal contact with colleagues stripped us of presenting a modicum of civility, even toward judges?

It is in appropriate to ask what the compensation for a position is after a first interview if they want you to go on three more and the interviewers on my first told me that was above their pay grade to tell me?????

Seems kind of ridiculous for a business to want to waste so much time to find out after a handful of interviews that the pay isnt aligned with my needs ......

I can see in biglaw not bringing up knowing damn well if you get an offer itll likely be high, but this is a midsize
