In many states, it’s illegal to ask salary history. There are so many reasons why you might have been underpaid.
Just say “I’m looking for X.” I’ve heard people say they tell interviewers that they can’t share their current salary because it violates their NDA or something like that.
Pro
Dunno if you’re in NYC but if you are, they can’t ask you.
Pro
Asking your salary expectations is normal. An interviewer asking you what you currently make is not anymore. Say what you expect or hope to make. Your current salary shouldn’t matter.
Never go first. When they ask how much you're looking to make, you say:
"That will depend on several things, like reporting structure, work load, nature of my accounts etc. Id love to get a sense of this stuff in the interview process, in the meantime can you share the budget or salary band for this role?"

The only time I’ve ever shared was if they offered me below what I was making. Which had happenedn
I always ask them what their range is, then add 20 to 30k more knowing that they are low-balling me.
Lie lie lie, no one will ever know unless someone at your company is contacted and breaks their own confidentiality… first time I left I went from $80 to $120 because they thought I was always at $100
You never need to share salary information with a potential employer. If they ask directly? Sorry, I’m not able to disclose that information. If they want pay stubs or 1040 C’s for verification? Black out all the numbers.
Pro
Absolutely not. Discuss only what you want. Your current salary should never enter this conversation
The only thing they can legally ask you is what your salary expectation is.
Now, they can ask casually to see if you would reveal voluntarily, but you should only reveal your expectations.
No need to lie. Just say "I need x amount" or "I am seeing compensation packages in the range of x and y"
Thank you all for your advice. This has been really helpful.
Zero reason to share anything other than what amount you will take for the job, or range you would consider. It’s a negotiation - money in exchange for your time and willingness to take responsibility for something they want you to do. What’s it worth to you? And is that amount in thier budgeted range?
Most ad jobs all pay in ranges we all know. Go get the money!
