No chance of making the move from an RIA
SA1 - you’re probably very correct considering I’ve never done it as a job duty, it’s all self taught. Maybe saying I’m “competent” isn’t a great way to put it but I know I have a basic understanding.
How long have you been out of school for? You will probably need some sort of intermediate step to build a resume that aligns better with IB.
- Consider an MBA. As others have said you will need a ~T15 to get recruited by brand names, but something a bit lower like Gtown, Indiana, ND, UNC would also look respectable - you’d just need to hustle a bit more to get into lower tier banks and risk going into FDD, corp dev, valuations, or something less related instead
- Could also look for an FP&A role where you’re doing more finance / accounting and modeling (assuming this is a reasonable jump for you to make now; maybe not). Leaner teams at PE backed companies would be the best place to land for this. Then I would target one of the many small LMM regional boutiques away from top tier cities (less competition)
- Consider corporate development instead of IB. You’ll still need to demonstrate a skillset in finance / strategy but generally easier to break into. A more natural path from FP&A, for example, especially when you’re just starting your career
In general this is not the time to try to break into IB, but hopefully in a couple years the environment will normalize
Thank you for this! I’m 3 years out of school so I realize that’s working against me. I’m not sure how much more difficult it will make things
3 years out of school is fine, most people who go to MBA have between 2-5 on average
I definitely know that I need higher paying / more intersting work at the very least, with IB still being the main goal. But this list is very helpful
