I think it’s a little more complicated than that.
Bourbon is something that takes half a decade to become something even remotely desirable.
I know it’s an unpopular opinion in today’s market, but lots of hyper-local whiskeys are either contract distilled and simply finished locally in barrels (essentially just a hype product in my opinion, despite the lines of people who will wait in front of a liquor store to buy it), or they are truly locally distilled in which case most of them aren’t “new”, as they would have started years ago to be producing a product worth buying.
This bourbon craze is weird because some of the more sincerely interesting things that have come out are, in my honest opinion, secondary products that the main bourbon companies have produced. Things like old Forrester distillery row products that are readily available but lack the flair of the entire tsunami of MGP-based stuff that has a fun story and people will sleep in front of specs to acquire. I feel like the best “buys” these days are the products that are made by the same old brands that have been doing it for years, but aren’t tater products like W12 and the like.
Just my 2 cents.
