If you’re white like me it’s so important to realize that we were raised in a society where institutionalized racism is normalized, and we were born with privilege. You can’t choose the color of your skin, but you can choose to put ego aside and reflect on why this isn’t happening to me, and be vocal about being anti-racist.

Do your research. Approach the interview like you’re curious about how you can best serve the people you’re interviewing with. What kind of work do they like? What’s their style of management? How do juniors like to work with seniors? Are your CDs more hands on or do they like you to take more initiative? How does your partner like to concept and what do they want to make? How can you work with strategy to create work that overdelivers on their objectives? How can you help account manage their clients? Basically if you can ask intelligent questions/provide evidence that makes whoever you’re going to work for/with feel like their jobs will be easier with you in the position, then they’ll want you in for sure.
If they like you, they’ll throw you softballs, if not they’ll ask you tough ones. Either way, turn them into opportunities to share anecdotes from your career that show you’re great to work with and can make lives easier. People don’t mind so much if you’ve failed, so long as you learned from them and are able to come back and apply those lessons in a positive way to people around you. Good luck!
