So, I got the dreaded email to relocate to Dallas, ATL, NJ or Seattle this year. Ideally I did not want to move and find another position, but after landing a few interviews and not getting an offer, I am forced to take the choice to relocate to Dallas (it being HQ) in future. Unfortunately, my spouse might lose her job because of this. Do you guys recommend, accepting relocation for now, find another job and not move or go ahead with the move?

Accept the job to buy time. Plan to move on your own, at least temporarily, whilst looking for other employment. That way you will protect your wife's income, because there's a risk that after moving they will make you redundant anyway.

like

Unless you relocate to Dallas as part of the deal, there is no exchange. It seems like there must be a new contract and an exchange of value for you to give up your severance. If you moved and they laid you off, that doesn't mean they get to reset the severance clock. If you left on your own, of course it does. That is where you have to take a hard look at the severance offered: is it enough to leave and start looking now versus "moving" and continuing your search? You could also commute and rent a dinky apartment for a bit.

like

This is very personal decision that you have to discuss with your wife and family, is different for everyone. I would accept it and move temporarily, rent an efficiency or a room and travel back home on weekends while looking for another role if you don’t want to relocate permanently due to your wife and family. Once you find something else you can resign.

You have to do what you think is best but just remember, you might upend your whole life (and you wife's) to move to a place you don't necessarily want to be for a job that may decide to let you go when the next round of layoffs happens in 6 months. There is zero loyalty with these corporations, consider that as you weigh your options.

Is this company actually strong? I would read this as a subtle way for them to have some people leave without having to pull the layoff trigger--but the reality is that will have to layoff soon anyway if that's the state of things. If you are in Tech, moving to a city with strong tech options (Seattle, North NJ (~=New York) is better than one that's basically just another Metro (Dallas, Atlanta) especially if you get laid off soon.

like

Agreed. This seems like a soft layoff in a sense.

Consider everything, like cost of living etc. plan to move and stay in temp housing for now. Dallas will have the lowest cost of living and TX overall is a good place to live. This could be a good thing for yall

Relocate yourself only if you can, leave the wife at home base. Wait for the winds to blow over, be flexible, don't have to break. I have done that before, worked out well.

Please note Texas is a no state Tax state and you will have more money in your pocket. Just fyi

like

Where do you WANT to be? If you want to stay put and can financially swing it with just your wife’s salary, stay. If you really need your salary for your family to make ends meet but losing hers wouldn’t hurt, then relocation may be best.

Depends where you live. I definitely would not move to Seattle, NJ, or Atlanta.

Can you make it on your spouse’s salary after you lose your job? If the answer is yes then it’s not all about you having a job. So you think it’s fair to uproot her and make her have to start over not only looking for a job but with no support system? She’s a partner not dependent.

Accept relocation, find a place where you can stay with a roommate, work there exactly how long to not pay the relocation back, then move back home. Free money.

The same policy was applied to my role. Our family was torn apart. We have to work at two locations. Life is still struggling and a lot of relocated folks are still on the chopping board. But I would do job hugging as long as I can. Don’t quit before they lay you off during this nutty time. I have been looking for a role in my home town for three years since then. Bitter…

Switching from commission to salary!

I’m considering a less sales-oriented role that doesn’t pay commission. The new role will have a higher base but lower overall earning potential.

What % haircut should be expected? As an example, if I make 100k (base + commission) today, would it be realistic to ask for 90k (10% cut) + equity to make up the difference?

Hi everyone! First time posting here. I am in a good sales role at my current company but it’s my first solid AE role in the tech industry. I am interested in exploring other opportunities as I know there are a lot out there, but is anyone else worried about the current economic state? I’m worried that if I find a new position for a new company and the economy going to sh** that I am worried about job security. Anyone else feel this way?

So, I just fired my first employee as a manager and I'm heartbroken. He was a great, great person but after 6 months on a PIP he just wasn't cutting it skills-wise. I know he was the provider of the household and his wife didn't have a job since she was raising three young ones. Needless to say, I had to take off because I felt terrible, sick to my stomach. How do you deal with firing guilt? Is that a thing? I can't help but feeling like I did something wrong.

Career advice?

I'm a relatively junior data engineer (2yoe), the only other engineer (senior) that trained me left about a 6 months ago and I negotiated a nice raise for the extra responsibilities.

My performance reviews have been stellar, but my manager is starting to look to hire a senior to help me deliver projects as we do lack capacity right now.

I feel like I might be missing an opportunity to ask for a promotion and hire a junior instead.

Any opinions/tips?

Hi everyone, a question to the tech industry at large.

Why are people so hesitant to hire disabled candidates?
