How do you handle revisions at a company?
I’m about to start an internship at IBM for UX Research. I’m super excited about it, and was wondering if anyone could tell me about the design culture there or how the company is for designers? So far online I’ve only heard about the company from consultants or software engineers. For more reference I’ll be working in Austin.

This is something where to avoid this you should be reaching out to stake holders to help be part of creating the proposed solutions and not just taking what they say and creating wire frames
What gives you the feeling that they will just box you in as a UI designer only?
Yeah I have definitely had this issue at past roles. A lot of times if UX is newer to an organization they tend to not fully understand where in the process UX should fall. They may say those term because they are industry words but they may not know when and where to leverage them. So you have to be a little more aggressive about it.
If it’s fast timeline for the first small tickets like that you may just have to crank them out and then make sure you have meetings before the next type of work comes down the pipeline. Better for you to schedule working session then wait for tracks of work to come to you.
My recommendation would if you have those tickets assigned I would suggested setting out a meeting with the PM and maybe an Eng do comb through to see what problems you are trying to solve with the design solution/wires they provided, ask lots of questions and agree on next steps.
You may all leave the meeting realizing that the problem and solutions need to be more thought through before moving forward.
how big of a company?
Around 150-200 people but the design team just grew to 8 people.

It tends to vary among PMs, but it is not uncommon to have PMs will create UI's in Balsamiq or other formats and expect that UX will just fill in the details.
I find that if I am able to demonstrate to them that "I can do that better" they usually back off with time. Most of them are so busy that they appreciate it if UX can take work off of their plate.

Schedule a meeting with the PM and the other stakeholders to walk through the wireframes. Go into detail at each stage and make sure all of the user needs are being met, that the interactions are clear, that the navigation is clear, etc. Sketch as you go, take lots of notes. If you find holes in the "design" or think of a better design, bring those ideas into the conversation.
In my experience, this exercise will cement your role as a UX designer and your value to the project.
If the PM's attitude is just, "flesh out what I gave you" and is unwilling to consider your suggestions or observations, then you may have a problem.
