I'm sorry. I can't imagine how stressful and demoralizing that must be. Unfortunately I think you're probably right - this reads to me like a PIP with extra steps. I'd be trying to find something new ASAP.
That’s what I’m doing. It did took some toll on mental health. Even if I have made mistakes and not a perfect fit for the job, no one deserves this
Unlike all the rest, I do not feel sorry for you. I think you have found yourself in a quite actionable position to not only improve your life, but to put a stigma on the company that is doing this to you do what is right do not back down.
Honestly, I feel like it will cost more than it brings, and even now, the second day into the weekend my intuition just screams RUN
You'll be so much happier once you don't work there.
I’m really looking forward to the day I can be gone …
I would definitely look for something new. Do not telegraph this to your current employer. Its none of their business.
Stay true to your standards. if you get an interview and they want to know why your looking, do NOT say anything negative about your current job! Prepare yourself for this question and think about what would improve your career and happiness and try to meet that. Tailor your response for the company you're applying to. Make sure you know what that company does and why you're a good fit. All of this along with your skills matter and can insure you end up somewhere you'll be appreciated. good luck
Get your resume buttoned up and submitted to as many matching JD's as you can. When interviews come, screen the company discretely so you don't end up in another toxic environment.
From my experience not in tech but in manufacturing everyone's fuck up is carried down the line so basically the higher ups is getting shit and so they passing it down to you as your the lead so. That's how it works in manufacturing anyhow. Bosses get shit leads get shit and then the guy responsible gets shit.
I've never heard of "renewing a probationary period" until today! Wow!! My suggestion is to definitely keep your head on a swivel and start looking for other job positions?
I was recently terminated from a position (without cause); upper mgmt./leadership had been riding me since Nov 2024. I won a battle with the assistance of HRSC back in February 2025. However, the constant psychological warfare was taking a toll on both my physical & mental health. Two days after I returned from a one-week vacation they called me into the office & fired me. I had no fight left. So, I let it go. I loved the job I was doing and performed it exceptionally well. Long story short, the extremely toxic work environment was unable to break me and my light; therefore, they got rid of me. So sad to sacrifice an excellent skilled employee just because her light constantly mirrored their misery. Good luck to you & keep your head up, no matter what.
Turns out, it is legit in some countries. For me it means a few more months of fear and not really being able to take leave or relax, and from the way it’s been going it’s not good months :( I can’t even take leave O am so scared. This has started to affect me physically and mentally and as of now I have nowhere to run yet… thank you for support
If you work at Liberty that is their MO. "Probation" is the excuse to harass you. Advice? Try to collect examples of your co-workers doing the exact same things- without consequence. Its building a case for your employment action.
It’s not Liberty. Sad thing is, it’s a kind of company that I wouldn’t expect it from to be done that way even if someone would be really underperforming
I speak from experience. Take the correction. Stay humble. Keep learning.
I know you might feel fear right now and there are a lot of people on this forum who are suggesting you bail, but if you believe you can receive the correction—-even if it’s MINOR and keep on smiling, you WILL make it through the probation period.
Managers and team leads aren’t looking for talent as much as they are people they can work well with them. And if that means putting up with their particular version of bull$$$ then, so be it. You will be stronger for it. And, you might even learn something. A lot of managers are perfectionists and they will up your game.
Sure, maybe this manager DOES want you gone. Prove them wrong. I’ve done this before by hard work during a write up. It knocked the chip off my shoulder and trust me, my boss wasn’t pleasant by any means. A racist and played head games.
LEAN IN. If you are supposed to exit this situation, a door will open. Otherwise, don’t give in to fear and be grateful for the opportunity to level up, even if it is the hard way.
Thank you ! It turns out the market isn’t so bad as I was fearing. My inbox is full with interview invites. Even if it works out in 2 cases out of 10 - it’s great. At this point I feel like any place is better than where I’m now
I had to tell my manager directly that she micromanages to the point that I question my work, leading me to turn things in later than normal. I also told HR that it's a toxic work environment, and if I weren't doing my work, it would be obvious. She's backed off a little, but I'm sorry you're dealing with this.
I don’t think it will do me any good if I raise it with him, he hasn’t been very approachable so far with me. We have a culture barrier, a bit of language barrier, I am new and remote while everyone else including him is not. I don’t believe my feedback is welcome here. Thank you for your words of support 🙏🏻
Start immediately applying for other jobs, and stop caring about anything they say. If they're gonna treat you like you're replaceable, replace them. Same goes for relationships.
They’re a big company so I guess they can afford it. Maybe I now know why I don’t like big companies 😬🙈
I'm gonna shoot straight with you. Bail. As in yesterday. This reeks of legal framework to terminate with cause when they're probably just using you for labor without providing the benefits they're legally required to with a full time permanent employee. They couldn't pay contractor pricing but only needed a temp. Start looking today and jump ship prior to termination. In the meantime, cover your rear. Document everything: communications, emails, phone calls, meetings, everything and every incident. They can gather documentation and so can you. This way when you get hit with the hammer, you've got a club to swing back with in arbitration or the local governing body for unemployment.
The only time I renewed someone's probation was someone I promoted internally who came highly recommended. Once she got into the role, I hired her for, she started calling off constantly. She had some things going on, but she had not worked enough for me to evaluate her fit for the role, so I extended her probation, and helped her work with HR to get FMLA. She was still in the role when I moved on 3 years later.
I was a new hire and I was in the role exactly they hired me for. I didn’t do any of this, actually I barely called off in months. I delivered consistently at my best ability, GitHub heatmap and contributions are the data I am looking at comparing it to my peers in the same role. I missed 1 or two non-critical things which I shortly after owned, admitted and fixed myself. Maybe they didn’t have enough strong reasons to end it in the end of first probation but now after renewal my manager has become even more vigilant looking for flaws… so all I don’t understand, why extend it but keep looking for every reason to fire me?
Unfortunately, I’ve had the same experience. I transferred departments within the same company and was very emphatic on the fact that I wanted excellent training. In my previous position, the company grew FAST and procedures and service expectations changed constantly. And while we were always told we could ask for help or clarification it was generally a “you should know how to do this” response. I had excellent reviews and feedback and even got “exceeds expectations” reviews. I was still quite clear I wanted more training and I would get a link or a generic webinar. It quickly went from “weekly meetings” that turned out to be constantly canceled or rescheduled to be 2-3 “weekly meetings” out of 12 weeks. The last meeting I received an email that I was improving and no further meetings were scheduled. Until 4 weeks later when then they let me go over a Teams meeting with HR and I was denied unemployment. It was a small team with not enough work to justify the number of people we had, but it’s frustrating to have the level of miscommunication.
I’ve said it time and time again that it would make everyone’s jobs easier and faster if everyone knew what the claim requires from the next department once it moves out of your hands. Make it seamless, you know? Ugh lol.
Find something better and when you have it, resign.
I did that and it's the best feeling ever.
Do not resign . That's what they want you to do to save unemployment. Many big companies swap out employees once they reach a certain salary. Start looking now. Move on to a better company.
I’m not eligible for unemployment most probably anyway
You are right - they are. They didn't have enough documentation at the conclusion of your probation, and this is now a trial by fire. Unless you do a remarkable turnaround - you are toast. So your gut instinct is correct - start looking and start packing!
I was doing everything right - and it still wasn’t enough. I was trying to take initiative - and was told not to do it when it was obvious that it could help them. I found another job and left.
You still have a job, right? Ride it out while you look for something else.
I consider getting a lawyer just in case
I think if you stay there it’s the sign of how that company does things. For peace of mind find somewhere better as it’s clearly a toxic workplace.
I had a 121 conversation with one of the teammates who has been there for a while, he said the same thing 🙈 that it doesn’t get better
I lead a software engineering team, and honestly no manager wants to micromanage and check your PR’s and user stories in infinite detail, as it is just too time consuming.. especially if they have a large team. There must be some issue, so in your next 1:1 just be totally transparent and ask them to describe in detail what issues they have (which you may not even be aware of) and work on a plan to fix them. Tell them that you cant work in such an environment and you are willing to meet whatever expectations but you need the understanding of the issues and space to improve.
I agree with you on micromanaging, I used to manage teams and I hated when it had to happen. I don’t think that’s what they’re doing though, I think they’re building a case sadly - for whatever reason that’s not very obvious. I get vague comments like “performance is bad” or “quality could be better” but there was no metrics or expectations set initially either
Out of all the comments of the so-called professionals, I am extremely surprised at how many of them do not have back bones how few of us are there out there
How do you mean?
