Solve a debate for me I think my husband is way underpaid. He has 5 years of experience in all kinds of dev but has specialized in cloud computing. He has been working for the same company since he graduated. He has worked his way up to lead developer and makes $110k. What would you think a remote employee should be making with 5 years of experience.

Thank you this is extremely helpful!

At a glance, he feels underpaid. Factors to consider are:

1) what is the company size and how is it performing?
2) in the last 5 years, how are his performance reviews looking?
3) what are the benefits, and any pre-IPO shares on the line?

Overall, I think it would not hurt to explore your options, update the resume/CV and see what other employers think you're worth.

Hope this helps!

I commented below but just read your response here, I think if he really wants to stay he should tell them that he’s done research and knows he can get X amount more realistically, and that due to inflation and poor benefits etc his current salary is not allowing him to be where he needs at this stage in life and wants a boost. See if they are willing to pay. If not then time to dust off the resume. Or if he feels more comfortable he can get some interviews done beforehand so he can gauge the job market before even mentioning it and be halfway to a new job before asking, just a lil more work/time for him this route but can potentially help him immensely in negotiating with them.

Yes, sadly, new hires are making more base with less experience than tenured folks across the tech industry and skill sets, due to highly competitive talent markets. Go get another offer and bring it back to his current employer to see what they do. The “I got an offer that’s hard to ignore” is a reasonable opener. If they balk, in most cases they don’t deserve him anyways.

like

It really depends, where do you live, what industry is he working in, and does he enjoy his work/the company/coworkers?
If he is willing to apply for other roles, it's really easy to find out if he is underpaid. If he doesn't want to leave his current role, it's a bit harder. If he does end up trying to negotiate for higher salary, I'd avoid the trap thinking that he is special and irreplaceable. It's better to focus on the value he adds to the company, not how difficult he would be to replace.

like

I have about 3 years of experience in cloud computing specifically infrastructure and devops less development and just got hired for another company and will be making $100k, I am remote and in FL. I think it really depends because he ofc can be making more money but if worklife balance isn't good whats the point. I am not a fan of FAANG or big tech in general which are places that do pay a lot. He should update his resume and apply just to see whats out there if anything.

like

He’s 100% underpaid and should look for other opportunities. Tell him to aim for 200+ range

likesmart

Really depends on location and company. Yeah, he could make more (2x-3x) if he gets in one of the top-paying tech companies, but he’ll have to pass the rigorous interview processes. Also, not a ton of hiring right now.

like

I mean definitely depends on location but should be anticipating north of 150 bare minimum

6 years experience in IT. Started at 62k, now at 180k. Same company however now on my third job/role. You don’t necessarily have to change companies, you can typically get a nice pay increase by applying for different jobs internally

like

The fact that he’s remote will create a lesser salary to begin with , but he’s probably specialized with a certain aspect of development with the only company he’s been with and may not be that marketable anywhere else so the company doesn’t feel the need to pay him more would be my guess. The biggest salary increases come when you switch companies. It’s that time for him

He is underpaid no doubt. Should be making AT LEAST $150k-$180k

like

Definitely underpaid. However i would suggest changing companies. I was paid 50% less than what I am making now at my old job and when I asked for a raise I was let go. It was a blessing disguise.

Depends on what areas of cloud computing he is working on currently

Definitely underpaid. For Lead engineer even in LCOL he should aim for 200K.

Having said that I think 5YOE is too little to be Lead. I think Sr is the right level and that would be like 150K in LCOL

Start salary as a cloud dev at amazon pays around $120k so yes your husband is underpaid he should be around 130-150k by now. He can go to management and let them know that he wants to match the market salary for his position, if they don’t agree he’ll need to start interviewing with other companies. Once he get a good deal he can let his manager know to either match that salary that other company offered or “i quit”. Good companies to apply for (centene, american express, amazon, fidelity, ratheon, and electric boat) there are many more but i know people that work at those i just mentioned and they’ll well payed and happy. At fidelity i know a guy that makes 130k and get 24% salary bonus every year, plus stocks.

I’ve built a reputation I’m proud of @ my company. I’m underpaid for what I do (started as an intern) & recently asked for a market adjustment. Management acknowledged that I’m undervalued & plans to set me up for a promotion. It’d come with more responsibility, which doesn’t align with my goals.

Is it wise for me to remain open to a promotion just for increased pay? Or should I be transparent with management about my goals (& possibly not get the pay I’m asking for)? Or any other tips?

I work for a late stage(ipo) start up, earlier this year we were acquired & since then they got rid of our yearly bonuses and gave us an ESOP grant.
2 RIFs later we are almost bare bones. Since we are coming up on our usual yearly evaluations many of us assumed (with multiple conversation from our managers) that pay raises and promotions were due.
In a recent All hands we found out that this year there will be no pay raises nor promotions based off merit. Is it time to jump ship?
