Some attorneys have told me to use my two years of clerkship as professional experience to not start at a law firm as entry level and this makes sense if I go into litigation, but I’m wondering if I can use my clerkships as leverage for corporate too. Any thoughts?

Maybe if you clerked for DE Chancery, but not sure how open firms would be to giving you two full years for corporate otherwise. Can’t hurt to ask, you might at least get one year.

like

Oh wow, DE Superior and Supreme? I think that’s actually also really good leverage—whether you’re looking at national or local Wilmington firms, I think you’re definitely in a good spot to ask for two years of credit. DE Supreme is relevant experience for corporate that firms are going to highly value, and Superior won’t hurt either.

My firm advertises year for year credit, but going into a transactional practice I only got 1 year credit for my two year clerkship. Which is fine.

Additional Posts in Law Clerks

As someone who is interested in public interest law (open to impact litigation or policy work), does it make sense to clerk in state court -- trial level -- and if so, for how long? Are these clerkships only useful for becoming a state court judge down the line or can they open doors to other paths?

The question is, is graduation from law school, not minimum competency? With this line of reasoning we are saying that law schools do not produce competent future lawyers, so should we instead switch to a system of taking the bar without the three years of a measure that frankly bar associations have deemed not an adequate measure? Dash this comment aside if it is fallible, but there is something here that has been overlooked. Competence is not regurgitation and memorization.

Hello everyone! I am a Judicial Law Clerk, which I have been for a little over two years now. However, I’m planning on moving into the AML/Compliance realm. I have a background in finance, having been a Finance Disbursing Officer in the Army for 6 years with one deployment in that role. Additionally, I am currently a JAG attorney and studying for my CAMS, hoping to take that exam in the next month or two. Any advice or referrals for anyone I can talk to learn more about the field? Thanks! :)

I’ve been at my clerkship for 5 years (4 with a different judge) and one with my current judge, and I heard horrible things about him before starting, but I assumed they were exaggerated. Turns out they’re all true, and I’ve had to start therapy to deal with him and the incredibly toxic environment. I’m trying to get out ASAP b/c he also has a history of firing clerks without cause or notice, but I think I’ll only be able to give two weeks notice if i get the job I’m interviewing for. Thoughts?
