That you have to be a man to be good at the job
That your agency cares about your mental health and actually tries to preserve it for the duration of your career. How is that for a myth? In reality, they want you to burn out and quit before you get max pay and become vested. About five years or so. But not too soon where the cost of your training is wasted. Why do you think areas like patrol are intentionally kept short handed in certain agencies? Yes I said it. Intentionally. In this career, you are expendable and of no value.
We were telling some supervisor this exact same thing. Lotta public service jobs are understaffed on purpose is our theory to make people quit in 3-5 years. While they are continuing to sell this dream of "fixing the agency". No changes, added duties, more stress, while wanting stats.
One of my favorite cop myths is that you can only be arrested if you are read your Miranda rights. This is simply not true - in most cases, police officers are not required to inform you of your rights until after you've been arrested (or if they're questioning you). Another interesting one is that you can't be arrested if you haven't broken any laws. Unfortunately, police officers have the right to arrest you if they have reasonable suspicion that you may have committed a crime, even if no crime has been committed yet. Finally, I love the myth that you can't get a ticket unless the officer is driving a marked car - this isn't true at all, as officers in unmarked cars are allowed to issue tickets too!
