Some of my coworkers refer to patients as crazy if they are just a little bit difficult or confused and I feel myself wince when it happens lately. Do you ever feel like people you work with could have a thicker skin especially being in healthcare?

I have reported several clinicians/ medical personnel because I have overheard them berating elderly or non-English speaking patients. As a former clinic manager I find that management is primarily responsible for this behavior. It should not be tolerated.

I'm sorry to hear about your experience, I think its wrong for people to behave that way. People love to complain so much they forget that it's someone else's real health issues that are at stake there.

Yes. Crazy is a totally different problem than demented. To be fair though, when it comes to thicker skin, yes they could have some.. and so could you too honestly, People are always gonna say what they're gonna say, for literally everything in life; like a commenter said below, reserve your opinions for your own judgements.

I guess I should not care as much but I'm a very caring person and it just rubs me the wrong way. When people are rude I try to be understanding but how can you be understanding of someone disparaging others for no good reason? I don't know if I expressed that clearly lol

I used to get that all the time when I worked bedside. I’d come on shift, 7 pm, and day shift giving report of hostile, combative, nasty patients. I always had the mindset to see for myself. Nine times out of ten, the patient was fine. Thin skinned day nurses were just “so busy and frazzled” 🙄 I don’t know what their problem was but, like I said” patients were fine. Perhaps it was the attitude of the day nurse? 🤷🏻‍♀️

In the environments in healthcare that we work in.....its fair to say, in my own personal experience some of these patients are downright crazy. I mean, we as healthcare workers are here to give our best care and because of alot of these patients audacity and behaviors they think they can treat us any kind of way. You can be the sweetest person to these patients and alot of times they will give the most rudest, combative obnoxious behaviors and attitudes. I don't think we signed up for that. So therefore you have to be crazy to come to a facility for health treatment, display disgusting behaviors and expect great care! yeah, that's crazy.

It’s dehumanizing language, and I’m glad you care about it. I wish your coworkers would, too.

I worked in direct patient care as XR & CT Technologist in hospitals (including surgery) & in MD offices. Some of the patients I connected with much more than some of my more impatient & less empathetic coworkers were those patients who were difficult or confused. When my patients were cantankerous guys, I would gently start to joke with them (they remind me of paternal grandpa). Would ask them what they do / did for a living & would ask questions while also acknowledging it’s hard to feel like you don’t have the control you need over your health. It’s hard to be patient when you feel bad & I appreciate you allowing me to help with your imaging. Confused folks, I tried to calmly assess them & use whatever felt right to connect with them. Treated my patients how I would want my beloved family to be treated.

As a former medical assistant, I try to sympathize with the person rooming me. I had a bad experience at my TXC. I would ask for this particular MA thinking we were cool. She told me about her divorce and we bonded. Not sure of what happened but I begin to be the problem patient and the administrator started following me around listening to me talk making me feel uncomfortable. Later my kids aged out but it didn’t matter I stopped going there because that was strange and Im now a quality risk member and I didn’t report any behavior although I could’ve but didn’t. I told her I use to dance per patient during rooming patients but no one knew it. It made my day to be in good character for the patient. Im not a problem parent just like to do my best. Thanks

I'm at the point where people are just mean bullies. If you don't have something nice to say, then don't say anything.

Sounds like the one who needs “thicker skin” is you?

Help - how do I fight claims by scammer healthcare providers?

I recently went to 2 different providers.

Dentist, made appt via Zocdoc to see a dentist that was in network. Another dentist at the location saw me instead who was out of network. I have text evidence they said it would be covered before visit. Claim was denied - asking for ~500 dollars.

Saw a specialist who’s office staff verified my insurance would fully cover the claim. Get the claim, says they are out of network. Owe 600.
