The external candidate might have been bringing more in. Or the company just finally realized that they had to bump up the salary. It’s just easier for them to swallow bringing in somebody else than paying for the people who are already employed.
You’re right but I just find that kind of logic weird. It seems like they won’t prefer to upskill and improve internal salary but can do that for external candidates

Yep, and it's infuriating. Internal equity policies are basically designed to protect the company from paying you market rate — meanwhile external candidates negotiate with no anchor. That $30K gap is exactly the cost of institutional knowledge companies claim they value but won't actually fund. The math always works out the same: loyalty gets you capped, leaving gets you paid. Did they at least try to counter when they saw the replacement offer?
