Something I didn’t expect about working in government is how often I’m stuck in the grey.
The policy says one thing, but real life is messy — and people’s lives are impacted by every decision.
I’m just trying to do the right thing, even when it’s not clear what that is.
Ever feel that way?

Oh yeah, all the time, and that’s where integrity really shows up. The human side doesn’t always fit neatly into policy, and that weight can sit heavy. Just trying to show up with care matters more than you think.

You said this so perfectly and I agree 💯. Thanks for sharing!!

Policy should be straight forward on eligibility rules and guidelines. State and federal policy dictate how money can be used and who can access them. Sometimes this means that some people do not qualify. The funding is meant to help those in need for a specific purpose if they meet all requirements. I suspect it may not be as gray as it seems, the rules and guidelines may not be documented in sufficient detail. You may have to revert to the source federal or state policy documentation .

That's where I struggle too because humans aren't black and white so how can policy. As much as the grey can be frustrating I also don't see a why where there isn't the grey.

One thing you must learn in federal government, rules and don't mean a thing. Policy is king until one of your bosses get their nutts in a bind. What how fast they look for an escape goat, which is usually the person that follows rules. Document all their actions and what they told you. CYA ALWAYS...

YES! Very valid point!! documentation is so important!

It’s called administrative discretion. Public administrators have to exercise judgment in their decision making. Federal policy rarely covers all situations. It’s important that public administrators have integrity and strong critical thinking, are able to set aside their personal opinions to decide what is best in the moment.

Valid point 🙏 thanks for sharing!

Well I recently told a guy I have been seeing I have HSV-2. We have not yet been physical but it’s been heading that direction. Man I hate this part - waiting to see what his response will be after he researches and talks to his doctor. I’m on daily meds which help reduce transmission risk. You’d think that since HSV-2 affects 20% of Americans and likely a higher % of gay men, there would be less taboo but it’s hardly ever talked about. Anyone else in my shoes? Or had it disclosed to them?

One of my frustrations with myself (writing it out here so I can work on it) is that I will print out something that I need, such as a traffic collision report. I will read it without actually reading it. This results in spending time without actually retaining info. Does this happen to anyone else? I’ve found that I can actually focus when I truly force myself, but often this happens after I’ve discovered an error or an important piece of information that I should have noticed earlier.

A HR question I really want to understand. ISRS HR quoted a podcast "The not so great resignation" saying 70% regret leaving and many want to go back to old employer. If this really the case the employee likely left due to higher pay at the new company. If they want to boomerang back they will likely come back at even a higher rate than they left the new company for. So getting double raise when they boomeranged. Isn't it unbeneficial, why not just give employee a 7% raise in the first place?
