Mention ‘bandwidth issues’ during meeting w manager. Just start logging off at 7, or even better at 530!
Chief
Exactly that--"I'm logging off at X, I can be reached via cell if there's something urgent that can't wait till tomorrow; otherwise I'll work on ABC tomorrow morning"
Tbh it will be hard. Your going to be expected to work as long as your senior or manager unless specific commitment until you own a piece of work. Once you own that piece of work as long as your managing it you can log off but should still see if they need help. For at least a year or so your kind of expected to be able and willing to help whenever. Once you make senior you will have more control. The best is to ask if they need anything around 5 and if they say no then just get off and be thankful
1. Don’t overcommit
2. Be open with your team. If there is a tight and urgent deadline you may have late nights but if nothing is imminent most people tend to be understanding
3. Block calendar in evening. I workout in the morning but I block 7-830 right now and have it clearly display “gym” (not even private)
4. Just don’t respond until the next day
5. Try to be online before your team if you go offline before them. If they start scheduling late meetings, counter with 6am meetings (this one is sarcasm)
i know every team is different, but I’m a staff 1 as well, so i’ll share my experience. i’ve shown my senior and manager since we started WFH that i produce good work, so they reached a point where they told me they feel comfortable with me determining my hours, as long as I’m meeting deadlines. quality of hours worked over quantity of hours worked
I encourage you to setup formal boundaries with your team! Even starting with “When you ping me past xPM, do you expect me to respond?” I’ve learned through asking that a lot of people on my team work late (due to childcare, personal efficiency preference, etc). That’s them taking advantage of EY’s flexibility, and they don’t expect me to also accommodate to their whacky schedule. I see that email coming in at 11pm and i sleep peacefully knowing i’ll get to it in the morning.
I’ve seen some seniors that never set hard boundaries keep getting pushed and pushed into more responsibility. The way public accounting is set up, it’ll push you around until you push back!
Hi I’m a staff! The best thing I’ve done is strategically *initiate* asking if i can help my senior/manager when I know they’ll be OOO or if they have a lot to manage. They’re usually impressed I took the initiative to help them so when I log out earlier other days it’s not that big a deal. All about balance!
Suggest having a meeting with your manager to ask how efficiencies can be improved during the day, to minimise working late each night, as you’re finding it taxing on your well-being right now.
Thanks!
Yes I am always available for emergencies, I have worked till 9:30 pm / 2:30 am when I had something I was owning . I am always the first one to suggest early morning meetings. And to be honest, my team is very understanding and nice. I just don’t know how to word it or communicate that hey I would like to set sometime that I am logging off.
